Sports Highlights 04.22.2013

Girls’ Track
The Martlets earned a win against the Fighting Daisies 71-70 but fell to Greenwich Academy 69-67. There were some excellent performances, including first place finishes in both meets by Erin Ozturk ’15 in the javelin, by Klara Lindstrom ’14 in the long and triple jump, and by Yvonne Pruitt ’14 in the shot put and discus.
 
First Golf
The Martlets continue to roll with more wins this week. On Wednesday, Westminster shot a solid 202, followed by K-O (218), Loomis (219) and Kent (242). Leading the way for Westminster were Jack Rubino ’13 and Xavier Morin ’13 with scores of 39 (+3) to tie for tournament medalist honors. On Saturday, the team played a solid round, posting a season-low score of 197 to beat Salisbury (209), Suffield (217) and Wilbraham & Monson (236). Westminster was led by Rubino and Morin who both posted scores of 35 (-1) to share the tournament medalist honors.
 
Second Golf
Two trips to Northwest Connecticut were both successful for the Martlets. On Wednesday, the Martlets managed to defeat both Kent (232) and Trinity-Pawling (244) by producing a winning total score of 209. Westminster’s Taggart Corriveau ’16 and Will Swanson ’15 shared co-medalist honors by shooting an impressive three over par 39. Against Berkshire School, the Black and Gold shot a 202 to the Bears’ 250. Addison Cilmi ’16 had an outstanding round, earning medalist honors with a score of 36. MacKenzie Hawkes ’15 had one of her best rounds of the year by shooting a 39.
 
First Girls’ Lacrosse
Westminster faced off against a tough Kent team and came away with a 15-7 win. A number of Martlets contributed to the offensive effort including Susanna Baker ’15, Eliza Christman ’15, Lindsay Hanau ’13, Mary French ’15, Annie French ’13, Alex Regan ’13, Margot Frank ’15 and Megan Walsh ’14. On defense, Olivia Bey ’15 and Meg Forelli ’'15 were aggressive and key in the team’s transition. Katie Savage ’15 had a number of key saves to secure the win.
 
Second Girls’ Lacrosse
The Martlets earned two wins this week over Williston and Kent. Against the Wildcats, Westminster came from behind to win 7-6. Emily Mell ’14 had three goals, Katie Simeon ’16 had two goals, and Katie Hovey ’14 and Sarah Melanson ’16 each had a goal for the Martlets. The victory against the Lions was a team effort as they did a great job doubling in the midfield and moving the ball in front of the net offensively. Scoring for the Martlets were Hovey, Georgia Morley ’15, Thiele Schroeder ’14, Meggie Gresham ’14 and Sarah Burstein ’15, and two goals each from Lexi Organ ’16 and Mell.
 
Third Girls’ Lacrosse
The Westminster Third Girls’ Lacrosse team played well against Deerfield and won 16-4. The Martlets did a nice job controlling the game off the draw. Katie Deveaux ’16 was particularly effective getting her own draws, which created many opportunities. Alyssa DiMaria ’15 led the team with six goals. Deveaux added three and Olivia Durham ’15 and Rachel Halfon ’16 added tow apiece. CC Lynch ’15 had 11 saves in net and did a great job leading the team from the goal.
 
First Boys’ Lacrosse
Two big Division 1 wins defined the week for the Martlets. Henry Anderson ’14 made 12 saves and Ryan Seymour ’15 scored three goals to lead Westminster past powerful Salisbury 9-8. After being down, Westminster eventually tied it at eight on a Mark Ellis ’13 goal after a big steal at the midfield, and Danny O'Connell ’13 netted the game-winner. Vinny Gisonti ’13 earned the game ball because of his inspiring hustle at the midfield. Brian Smyth ’16 (game ball) scored his second goal of the day 92 seconds into OT as the Martlets held off a late T-P comeback. Anderson made 10 saves (and had one assist) against a strong shooting opponent, Sam Dardani ’14 scored four times, three from Danny O'Connell ’13, while Tristan Rai ’14 added three goals.
 
Third Boys’ Lacrosse
The Martlets took to the road to play a deep Taft team and won 10-2. After a slow start, the Martlets were able to put home a couple of goals to take a 5-2 lead heading into halftime. Westminster was able to pull away in the third with lots of settled offense. The Martlets won their second game of the week again Kent 11-2.
 
Second Boys’ Tennis
In a close match against Salisbury, the Westminster boys pulled out a thrilling 4-3 win. After losing the doubles point, a number of close singles matches determined the match. At No. 1, Max Eklund ’16 was down 4-1 but came back to win 7-5, 6-1. Asante Asiedu ’13 pulled off a close second set to win 6-1, 7-5. Will O’Donnell ’13 needed a tiebreaker to win his second set and the match. Finally, Mark Pfister ’14 fought from behind to win his match in a tiebreaker for the third set.
 
First Softball
The Martlets had two more big wins over Taft and Canterbury. Amanda Savino ’14 pitched brilliantly, striking out 10 batters and allowing just one single against the Rhinos. Rachel Monroe ’14 had five base hits, Brooke Wolejko ’14 had two doubles, a triple and two runs batted in, Kat Pate ’14 tripled twice and had two RBIs, while Jade Marlowe ’15 had three singles and drove in two runs for the Black and Gold. Michela Gozzi ’13 was the fielding star of the game, making two terrific catches on balls hit in the gap between first and second base. Against the Saints, Savino pitched her second perfect game of the season. Jordan Gowdy ’14, Monroe and Savino had three hits apiece to pace the offense.
 
Second Softball
In their first game, the Martlets earned a 16-12 come-from-behind victory over the Rhinos. Lizzie Hark ’14 and Kaitlyn McCausland ’16 combined for great hitting and defense. Dana Niland ’13 also contributed to the win with some solid pitching.
 
First Girls’ Tennis
Westminster had a good win against Williston, 9-0. Katherine Kelter ’14 and Lia Petersen ’14 were strong at the No. 1 doubles position, winning 8-1; At No. 2, Ginny Durfee ’15 and Julia Cooper ’15 played well together and won 8-3; and Brittany Swanson ’14 and Julie LeBlanc ’13 anchored the No. 3 position and also won 8-1. In singles play, No. 1 Petersen won decisively; No. 2 Swanson battled back from 2-3 in the first set to win 6-4, lost the second in a tiebreaker, then rebound in the super tiebreaker to win 6-4, 6-7, (10-3). At No. 3, Kelter moved the ball around well and won 6-1, 6-1; Durfee at No. 4 was steady throughout and won 6-1, 6-0; at No. 5 singles, Wells Poler ’16 played an excellent match and came away with a 6-1, 7-6 victory. At No. 6, Cooper played very well in a 6-1, 6-0 win.
 
Second Girls’ Tennis
The Martlets won 7-0 against Williston and Kent this week. At No. 1 singles against the Wildcats, Mimi Connelly ’15 didn’t drop a game, nor did Katherine Ogden ’16 at No. 3. Annie Lacey’s ’14 only lost one in the No. 2 singles position. Sarah Holmes ’13 exercised quiet determination to win 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) at No. 4 singles. The No. 1 doubles team of Caty Pooley ’13 and Claire Egan ’14 dominated 6-0, 6-1. Similarly, Margot Hahn ’14 and Cara Dealy ’13 exerted consistent pressure at the net and won 6-4, 6-0. Playing No. 3 doubles, Third Formers Callie Brossman and Emma Alfeld won 6-2, 6-0. Play was similarly decisive against the Lions. With singles wins from Lacey, Ogden, Holmes and Sarah Poling ’16. Egan/Pooley were in control at No. 1 doubles while No. 2 doubles Dealy/ Hahn needed a third set tiebreaker to win as did Alfeld and Susie Carter ’16 at No. 3 doubles.
