Winter Term Awards Ceremony

Members of the Westminster community were honored at an awards ceremony March 22 for their achievements during the 2012-2013 winter term. “Today’s awards ceremony offers us an opportunity to highlight achievements from the winter term in the classroom, athletics, the arts and service,” said Headmaster Bill Philip in welcoming everyone to the ceremony. “Simply put, we enjoyed quite an exciting term.”

He then highlighted some people and events from the term, including Debbie Ribaudo for her work on the Annual Fund; students and faculty who led chapel services and helped with Admissions events and tours; the Westminster News staff for their reporting; those who coordinated informal and formal events including the talent show, coffee houses, the ADL program, Model United Nations and the Chinese New Year celebration; students who helped with a student open house at Pratt House; those who participated in various community service activities both on and off campus; students who played leadership roles in Dramat; and students who had extraordinary performances on the SAT and ACT, and who performed in the American Mathematics Competition.

He ended his remarks by citing a sportsmanship award boys’ squash received from the New England Interscholastic Squash Association. “Sportsmanship is at the essence of what it means to be a Martlet,” he said, “That busy, restless, gritty, mythological, footless bird that can never rest, remaining always in flight, except when it is in the chapel. … That our chapel offers a Martlet its only refuge for rest underscores the importance of the reflection about enduring human values that occurs twice each week in that space — values with which we strive to guide our lives, values such as those conveyed by good sportsmanship.”
