Twenty-Eight Students Attend Yale Model United Nations Conference

For the fifth year in a row, Westminster students journeyed to New Haven for Yale’s Model United Nations conference (YMUN). Led by co-presidents Bridget Gorham ’13 and Jane Lee ’13, the 28 students ranged from Third Formers to Sixth Formers and possessed varying levels of experience with MUN.

Westminster students joined more than 1,300 other high school students Jan. 24-27 in events that began Thursday night and lasted until Sunday afternoon. The conference began with a sobering speech by Professor Charlie Hill on the current geopolitical environment and then students were off to committee. The Westminster delegation represented Iraq and Germany this year and were involved in debates that covered topics such as the Euro crisis, climate change and nuclear war. Standing out for her performance in SOCHUM, Klara Lindstrom ’14 received an honorable mention award for her contributions in committee.

Other highlights of the weekend included Friday night’s midnight crisis during which "New York Times reporter" Austin Pope ’15 and "National Security Advisor" Ryan Fox ’14 were pulled from their beds to attend committee. Students also were able to enjoy shopping and eating in New Haven and the always interesting delegate dance Saturday night. While they spent many hours in committee over the course of the weekend (more than 16 hours), MUN always proves to be a rewarding and enriching experience for all who attend.
