First Boys’ Squash
The Martlets were double winners on Wednesday against Loomis and Berkshire. Opening Founders League play, the Black and Gold came away with a hard-fought 6-1 win against a deep, talented Loomis team. The match was much closer than the score indicates. Miguel Castello ’13 was particularly strong with the clinching fourth win at No. 6. Against the Bears, the best match of the evening was at No. 1 where Alvin Heumann ’14 won in four games to secure the 7-0 shutout. There were a number of good results, but Castello was again the most dominant player.
 
Second Boys’ Squash
In their first match of the season, the Martlets earned a 9-0 victory over rival Loomis. All of the matches were competitive. At No. 1, Wonjune Kang ’16 came back from 0-2 to win the match. Dan Parsons ’13 also won in five games at No. 4 as did John Dowling ’14 at No. 7. It took Preston Miller ’13 four games to claim victory at No. 3. Charlie Russell ’14 at No. 2, Will Swanson ’14 at No. 5, and Rob Mulholland ’15 at No. 6 won their matches in straight games. Curtis Brackett ’13 and Gavin Durham ’13 swept their opponents at Nos. 8 and 9.
 
First Girls’ Squash
In their first two contests of the season, the Martlets didn’t drop a match. Against Millbrook, the Black and Gold didn’t drop a game. Westover proved to be more of a challenge. Cricket di Galoma ’14 was pushed to five games at No. 3 and won the final game 13-11 for the sweep. Laila Samy ’14 and Ginny Durfee ’15 had decisive wins at No. 1 and No. 2.
 
Second Girls’ Squash
Two matches into their season, the Martlets have compiled a 13-1 match record against Millbrook and Westover. Wells Poler ’16 and Karlie Werdmolder ’13 were particularly dominant, winning both matches in three straight games.
 
First Girls’ Hockey
The Martlets had two more close wins this week over Kent and Loomis. In the 3-2 win over the Lions, Eleni Tebano ’13, Katie Savage ’15 and Kat Pate ’14 scored with Pate finding the goal off of a pass from Savage with 17 seconds remaining in the game to get the win. It was another one-goal win against the Pelicans. The Martlets had a 2-0 lead with goals from Sarah Melanson ’16 and Tori DeAngelis ’14. In the final minutes, the Martlets took a penalty, and Loomis pulled their goalie and was able to score. In the last 30 seconds of the game, Eleni Tebano ’13, Paige Capistran ’16, Pate and Kaitlin Tse ’15 showed their toughness on defense. Not to be out done, Brooke Wolejko ’14 made a number of incredible saves to preserve the victory.
 
Second Girls’ Hockey
In their first games of the season, the Martlets were impressively dominant against Deerfield and Loomis. Michela Gozzi ’13, Katie Simeon ’16, Eliza Christman ’15, Stina Ladd ’15 and Ellie Deveaux ’14 all figured in on the scoring against the Big Green. Jen Girard ’14 in goal had 10 saves in the 6-2 win. The Martlets were even more in control against Loomis, tallying eight goals in the shutout. Katie Hovey ’14 earned a hat trick plus one more; Deveaux added two more goals and Simeon and Gozzi also scored. Girard clinched the shutout with six saves.
 
First Boys’ Basketball
The two wins this week for First Boys’ Basketball were highlighted by great defense. In their 84-48 win over K-O, the Martlets created 22 Wyvern turnovers in the first half alone. Kris Hargraves ’13 led all scorers with 27 points while Jordan Smart ’14 added 18. Hargraves and Smart combined to create 19 Kingswood turnovers, and Yianni Gavalas ’13 had eight points and four steals. Mike McNally ’14 scored 11 points for Westminster and Alex Tomashoff ’13 grabbed seven rebounds. Against Deerfield, Hargraves ’13 again led the Black and Gold with seven steals and 24 points, while Tomashoff grabbed 12 rebounds, helping the Martlets to a 63-44 win. Smart added nine points and had five steals, and Roman Liu ’14 came up big as well, scoring eight and causing three DA turnovers.
 
First Boys’ Hockey
The Martlets traveled to Pomfret and came away with a 5-2 win. JP Schuhlen ’15, Mario Benicky ’14 and Sean Orlando ’13 scored in the first period to give the Black and Gold a 3-1 lead. Orlando scored again in the second to extend the lead. Zac Hamilton ’14 was solid in net finishing the game with 22 saves including stopping a Pomfret penalty shot. During the third period, the Martlets were able to keep a lot of pressure on the home team, putting 19 shots on net, including one more goal by Taggart Corriveau ’16.
 
Second Boys’ Hockey
It was two wins on the week for the Black and Gold, including a 6-2 victory over Choate and a shutout of Pomfret. Pierce Cote ’14 earned a hat trick against the Wild Boarswith Will Sprenker ’13, Mac McCormick ’16 and Bryson Tomcik ’15 also scoring. Against the Griffins, Tomcik had two goals and Pat Brandell ’15, Dan Roberts ’14, and McCormick rounded out the offensive effort. Ben Bauchiero ’14 made some good saves to preserve the shutout aided by the defensive unit of Drew Simeon ’15, Nick Aube ’15, Miller Guth ’16, Jay Powell ’16, Ryan Seymour ’15 and Peter Johnson ’15.
 
Third Boys’ Hockey
Westminster improved to 2-1 on the season with a 2-1 victory over Rumsey Hall and a 3-2 win against Simsbury High JV. Jack Bitterli ’16 and Chris Connal ’16 were the goal scorers against Rumsey, with Ben Bauchiero ’14 securing 12 saves for the ultimate win. Sawyer Tracy ’15, Bitterli and Tommy Babington ’15 combined for goals in the second game with Mark Pfister ’14 earning the win between the pipes.
 
First Boys’ Swimming
The Martlets claimed the top spot in the overall team standings at the KO Invitational Saturday at Wesleyan. Co-captain Herbert Cheng ’13 won the 100 Backstroke in convincing form and topped his heat in the 200 IM. Co-captains Drew Poling ’13 and Henry Chou ’14 were also sharp in the season-opening contest, teaming up with Cheng and newcomer Toby Casper ’14 to place second in the 200 Medley Relay and with Travis Percy ’14 to place first in the 200 Free Relay. Jimmy Guiliano ’13 added a runner-up finish in the diving, and John Fitzpatrick ’13 and Percy won their heats in the 100 IM and 50 Free respectively.
 
First Girl’s Basketball
Despite some attempts by Hopkins to close the gap, the Martlets led from beginning to end against the home team, ending with a 46-31 win. Rachel Monroe ’14, Meg Richard ’15 and Jacqui Richard ’16 led the scoring, with Monroe dominating the first half and Meg picking up the slack in the second half. The Black and Gold got more balanced scoring and key contributions off their bench by Charlotte Gould ’13, Emma Merlin ’16, Olivia Tawney ’15 and Alyssa DiMaria ’15.
