Sports Highlights 11.12.2012

First Girls’ Soccer
The Black and Gold ended a wonderful regular season with a tense 2-1 victory over Greenwich Academy. The Martlets dominated the first half, which led to two goals. Sally Sandoval ’15 found Meg Richard ’15 for the first goal, and captain Iris Dayton ’13 scored near the end of the half. Greenwich rebounded with a goal of its own in the second, but Westminster was able to hold for the win. The Martlets, the No. 6 seed, will now travel to Hotchkiss, the No. 3 seed, to play in the New England Class A tournament quarterfinals.

Second Girls’ Soccer
The Second Girls closed their season with a 5-0 victory over Hopkins. Kylie Loureiro ’15 had the first and last goals of the day, while Anne Bitterli ’16, Claire Hotaling ’16, and Lexi Organ ’16 also scored. Katherine Eckerson ’16 and Paige Brackett ’16 both were instrumental in initiating numerous attacks. The defense of Meg Forelli ’15, Isabel Tibbetts ’15, Kaitlin McCausland ’16 and Maeve DeFronzo ’16 was rock solid, along with Eugenia Naamon ’14 in goal. Co-captains Haley Schopp ’13 and Shani Rosenstock ’13 controlled the central midfield with great leadership and poise.

First Field Hockey
The Martlets left everything on the field in their final game against a highly ranked Greenwich squad. The Black and Gold defense led by stellar goaltending from Kat Pate ’14 shutdown the GA attack and earned the shutout. GA dominated much of the game but was ultimately unable to score. The Martlets capitalized on a corner in the second half to secure the win. Alli Devins ’13 put the ball in off of an Eleni Tebano ’13 rebound. It was an exciting, fast-paced game that highlighted the determination of the Martlet squad to pull out the win.

First Boys’ Cross Country
The Martlets traveled to Hebron Academy in Maine for the New England Division II meet and came home in ninth place. Most impressively, Aaron Rubin ’15 finished only 26 seconds behind the winner and took the sixth-place finish, good enough to earn All-New England honors and a berth at the All-Star race next weekend. Following Rubin was co-captain Travis Percy ’14 (37th), Tommy Griffith ’14 (51), Toby Casper ’14 (71) and co-captain Will Sprenker ’13 (76). The displacers were right there as well, with Ronald Yeung ’13 (80) and Gary Yang ’13 (86) both finishing in the top two thirds of this fast field.

First Girls’ Cross Country
Also competing at Hebron in New Englands, the Black and Gold managed a fifth-place finish, one of the best results in a long time for Westminster. Paige Capistran ’16, capping a phenomenal rookie season, broke past two girls in the final 60 meters to take 11th overall and earn All-New England honors and a berth at the All-Star meet. Another rookie, Sydney Rivers ’13 was close behind Capistran and also earned All-New England honors with an 18th-place finish. The other scorers were Mary Anderson ’14 (34), co-captain Molly Mullen ’13 (45), and Klara Lindstrom ’14 (57).
