Sports Highlights

First Field Hockey
The Martlets put together two solid games this week. In the first contest against Porter’s, Westminster finally found the offense it had been looking for and emerged with a 7-0 win. Hayley Ahouse ’13 was a scoring machine, netting three goals. Eleni Tebano ’13, Catherine Crawley ’16, Ashley Carbone ’15 and Brooke Wolejko ’14 also added to the tally. It was a well-balanced attack that Porter’s could not stop. Wolejko and Megan Walsh ’14 were forces to be reckoned with in particular, causing havoc for the Fighting Daisies. In their second game of the week, the Martlets faced an always tough Loomis squad. Playing even in the first half, the Pelicans got on the board first in the second and held the lead until 10 seconds remained in the game when, on an Alli Devins ’13 corner, Lindsay Hanau ’13 found Tebano, who drilled the ball into the cage to tie the game. In overtime, the Martlets dominated but were unable to break the deadlock.

Second Field Hockey
In their only game of the week, the Martlets hosted Loomis in a hard-played, vigorous game, with Westminster coming out on top, 3-0. Westminster was able to keep the ball in its opponent’s half of the field for a good portion of the game. Ginny Durfee ’15 put the Martlets on the board near the end of the first half and Jade Marlowe ’15 scored again to put the Martlets up 2-0 going into the break. With five minutes to go in the game, the Martlets sealed the win when Marlowe struck the ball outside of the circle from the right to Katie O’Connor ’15, who was waiting off of the left post for a perfect feed. In goal, Olivia Tawney ’15 had two saves in the first half, and Susie Black ’15 had three in the second half. The entire defense worked well together to preserve the shutout.

Third Field Hockey
The Black and Gold managed two wins during the week over Loomis and Taft. In their 4-0 victory over the Pelicans, Jolene Patrina ’15 led the team with three goals, and Erin Ozturk ’15 figured in on the fourth. All of the goals came from good ball movement and teamwork. In their second game of the week, it was Ozturk’s chance to earn the hat trick. Rachel Halfon ’16 also scored two goals, and Amanda Savino ’14 netted the final tally. In both games, the Westminster defense anchored ably by Julia Carter ’16, Madeleine Percival ’15, Evie Pope ’16 and Eda Tepebag ’13 did a fine job in containing their opponents. Hadley Smith ’15 in goal also did her part to earn the wins.

First Boys’ Cross Country
The Westminster harriers went 1-1 against Williston and Kingswood Oxford. The team was again led by Aaron Rubin ’15, who found himself up against a powerful trio of senior Wildcats. Despite coming in fourth, Rubin posted a time (17:05) that placed him as the third fastest Martlet in the past decade or so of Westminster cross country. Co-captain Travis Percy ’14 also dipped below the 18-minute mark for the first time, and he was followed closely by a surging Tommy Griffith ’14, who dropped his lifetime best by more than a minute on this flat, fast course. Rounding out the First Team seven were co-captain Will Sprenker ’13, Toby Casper ’14, Ben Shaver ’16 and Ronald Yeung ’13. In the victory against KO, the displacers in the First Team race added the extra points to the KO score that put them away.

Second Boys’ Cross Country
The Martlets had a win over Kingswood Oxford in a tri-meet at Williston. Every runner posted a season or lifetime best, with the top three runners finishing in under 20 minutes. The Second team finishers were Stephan Reyes ’14, Luke Tressy ’16, Dan Parsons ’13, Gary Yang ’13, Kevin Choi ’15, Tim Harris ’16 and Aaron Poston ’15. Other notable finishers were Nick Rohn ’15 and Lucien Malle ’15, as these newcomers broke the seven-minute pace barrier in this early career race, and Noah Zempsky ’13 and Philip Song ’15, veterans who also posted lifetime bests. Despite losing to a deep Williston squad, it was a great day for the Martlets.

First Girls’ Cross Country
Facing both KO and Williston, the Martlets came home double winners. Among the top seven runners, six out of the seven ran personal bests, and overall, 14 Westminster girls ran personal records. Paige Capistran ’16 came flying in at 20:12. Close behind her was Sixth Former Sydney Rivers with a speedy 20:30, followed by Fifth Formers Klara Lindstrom and Mary Anderson. Captain and Sixth Former Molly Mullen showed her grit and grace by pushing herself to finish fifth, passing enough Williston girls to win the meet for Westminster. Dana Niland ’13 and Mae Mullen ’14 rounded out the top seven for the Martlets, with all top seven finishers under 25 minutes.

First Girls’ Soccer
The Black and Gold offense was unstoppable in its 6-0 victory over Miss Porter’s. Despite tons of pressure, Westminster took most of the first half to get on the board. Finally, captain Iris Dayton ’13 blew past her defender along the goal line and found the back of the net. Just a minute, later Brittany Swanson ’14 scored on a penalty kick to send the hosts into the halftime with a 2-0 lead. The Martlets were more productive in the second half. Dayton scored again, and Sally Sandoval ’15 ripped a shot from the 25-yard mark minutes later. Ellie Deveaux ’14 and Jacqui Richard ’16 closed out the scoring.

Second Girls’ Soccer
The Martlets earned two wins for the week with one over Porter’s and the other against Loomis. Against the Fighting Daisies, they unleashed a flurry of goals, ultimately blanking Porter’s 7-0. Katherine Eckerson ’16 scored twice, while single goals were added by Emma Merlin ’16, Anne Bitterli ’16, Alyssa DiMaria ’15 and Lexi Organ ’16. With an emphasis on ball control, additional fine performances were turned in by Chandler Nemetz ’14, Isabel Tibbetts ’15 and Hallie Feibel ’16. Westminster also played well in an early evening duel to hold off the Pelicans 2-1. Kylie Loureiro ’15 got the Martlets on the board, but Loomis knotted the score before the half. A mere three minutes into the second frame, the Black and Gold took the lead again when Lexi Organ ’16 scored. The 2-1 lead held until the final whistle. Notable contributions were made by Eckerson in attack, Paige Brackett ’16 and Haley Schopp ’13 in the midfield.

Third Girls’ Soccer
The Martlets hosted the Pelicans and were victorious, 1-0, in the hotly contested game. The score was 0-0 at the half, and the girls worked hard the entire game to finally score a goal in the second half. The lone goal of the game was scored by Nina Wilmerding ’15 on a corner kick by Mackenzie Hawkes ’15. CC Lynch ’15 had a great game on defense and helped shut down the Pelican offense.

Second Boys’ Soccer
Westminster notched two wins for the week against Williston and KO. In the first tilt, George Brown ’15 scored twice, both on headers, and Sam Dardani ’14 converted a penalty kick, as the Martlets tallied three times in the second half to earn the win. After falling behind, the Martlets woke up and fought back, as the Westminster defense of Ethan Holdaway ’13, Zac Hamilton ’14, Curtis Brackett ’13, Alastair Smith ’13, Riley Bitterli ’14 (who also played well in the midfield), and Zach Orzech ’16 did an excellent job keeping Williston from penetrating to within a dangerous range. Against KO, Eric Rost ’14 scored twice and Eric Leydecker ’15 and Noah Fosse ’16 each tallied once as Westminster defeated a gritty Wyvern team 4-0. The Martlets were able to dominate the play and keep the ball away from the Westminster defensive end to secure the shutout.

Third Boys’ Soccer
The Third Boys’ Soccer team visited Loomis and came away with a 7-0 victory. Alex Son ’15 was the first to strike for the Black and Gold and, ultimately, earned a hat trick for the day. David Swenson ’15, George Crawford ’15, George Doolan ’15, and Mac Larned ’15 also scored for Westminster. It truly was a great team effort with the entire team contributing in some form.

Fourth Boys’ Soccer
The Martlets traveled to Deerfield to take on the Big Green and came away with a 3-0 decision. Bryan Yekelchik ’16 scored to get the team started, and Frankie Sullivan ’15 followed by netting two of his own in the second half. Important to the success during the day was the stalwart defense of Soon Park ’14, Sawyer Tracy ’15, Tommy Babington ’15, Addison Cilmi ’16, Jay Powell ’16 and Max Eklund ’16, who were instrumental in holding Deerfield scoreless.
