Students Receive National Recognition

Two Westminster School Sixth Formers have earned national recognition for their academic achievements.
 
Molly Mullen has been named a Semifinalist in the 58th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. She is one of 16,000 academically talented high school students who have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 8,300 National Merit Scholarships worth $32 million that will be offered next spring. Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition.
 
During her Westminster career, Molly, a resident of East Granby, Conn., has earned Summus every term, was named an AP Scholar with Distinction and won the Brian Ford Writing Prize last spring. She will give a reading at Westminster’s first Friday Nights in Gund event of the year on Sept. 28. Molly also serves as co-editor of the Westminster News and the Martlet, is tri-captain of girls’ cross country and runs track.
 
Stan Sandoval, a resident of Simsbury, has been named a 2012-13 National Hispanic Recognition Program Scholar (NHRP) by the College Board. This year, NHRP recognized about 5,000 Hispanic/Latino students selected from a pool of more than 253,000 who took the 2011 PSAT/NMSQT/PAA. The award was initiated in 1983 to identify outstanding Hispanic/Latino high school students.
 
While at Westminster, Stan was named a National Merit Commended Scholar and an AP Scholar with Distinction. A player with Oakwood U17/18 U.S. Soccer Development Academy,he has played and served as captain for Westminster’s First Boys’ Soccer team and is coaching Fourths Soccer this fall. He also is a member of Black and Gold, and will play a lead role in Dramat’s fall production of “The Imaginary Cuckold.”
