Student Meets Officials at Obama for America Headquarters

Alexandra Colon ’13 participated in a one-day trip to Obama for America headquarters in Chicago in August as a part of her involvement in New Jersey SEEDS (Scholars, Educators, Excellence, Dedication, Success), a nonprofit organization founded in 1992 that prepares motivated, high-achieving, low-income students for admission to private schools and colleges across the country.

Joel Benenson, who is the lead pollster for the Obama campaign, made the trip possible.  After arriving in Chicago on a morning flight, Alexandra and another SEEDS alumna spent several hours touring the Obama headquarters, where they met and talked with top campaign officials who oversee communications strategy, press operations, grass-roots organizing, social media, data collection and analytics.

Among those with whom they met were David Simas, who coordinates polling and messaging research; Jon Fromowitz, senior analyst at the Benenson Strategy Group; Buffy Wicks, deputy director of the White House Office of Public Engagement; Jen O’Malley, executive director, Democratic National Committee; James Kvaal, policy director; Daniel Wagner, chief analytics officer; David Axelrod, senior adviser to President Obama's re-election campaign; Stephanie Cutter, deputy campaign manager; Ben LaBolt, press secretary, OFA; and Jim Messina, campaign manager.

“I had a wonderful experience at the Obama headquarters,” said Alexandra, who has participated in New Jersey SEEDS since 2008.  “I met a lot of influential people who showed me all of the hard work that goes into a campaign.  I am so grateful to have been chosen and given this opportunity.”

“Alexandra represented New Jersey SEEDS and Westminster very well on the trip,” said Bernadette Sarlo, associate director of placement with New Jersey SEEDS.
