Sports Highlights 05.13.2012

First Softball
In a contest featuring two strong teams, Westminster defeated Miss Porter's 9-4 in an intense, well-played game. Sydney Daniels ’13 and Brooke Wolejko ’14 powered the offense with multiple hits. Daniels had a double, a single and 2 RBIs, while Wolejko drove in three runs. Kat Pate ’14 and Amanda Savino ’14 each contributed two hits and two RBIs. Hayley Ahouse ’13 also singled and scored a run in the inning. Westminster pitcher Savino allowed just six hits in seven innings.
 
Second Girls’ Lacrosse
The Martlets earned wins over Choate and Hopkins. Sarah Holmes ’13 led the offense for the week with a hat trick in each game. Katie O’Connor ’15 was also impressive scoring four goals against Choate and two against Hopkins. Emily Mell ’14 also had three goals for the week.
Marissa Mason ’12 and Meggie Gresham ’14 played strong defense, having multiple interceptions and Abby Reed ’14 had great games in goal. The defensive effort was highlighted by timely interceptions and ground-ball controls by Katie Hovey ’14, Emily Clippinger ’14 and Olivia Durham ’15.
 
Second Boys’ Lacrosse
The Martlets put together two good wins this week against Berkshire and Kent. The Black and Gold was dominant in both contests. Against the Bears, Ryan Seymour ’14 led the Martlets with four points (2G, 2 A), and other multiple scorers were Gavin Durham ’13 (2 G) and Sam Pope ’12 (2 G). In the Kent game, game-ball winners were Drew Poling ’13 and Pope on the strength of their co-three point games (2G 1A).
 
Third Boys’ Lacrosse
Westminster won in dramatic fashion for the second consecutive game, beating Pomfret in overtime by a score of 6-5. Ben Baucherio ’14 scored twice for Westminster as did Sean Orlando ’13 who had the game winner in overtime. Dan Parsons ’13 had a spectacular game in goal.
 
First Golf
First Golf came away with a 206-235 victory over visiting Canterbury. Jack Rubino ’13 led the way for the Martlets with a 38 (+2), followed by David Hallisey ’13 (41), Daniel Snyder ’13 (41), Derek Leydecker ’15 (42), Xavier Morin ’13 (44), and Phillipe Morin ’15 (46).
 
Second Golf
The Martlets defeated Kent 206 to 245. Scorers for Westminster included George Crawford ’15 (38), Will Swanson ’14 (42), Herbert Cheng ’13 (47), MacKenzie Hawkes ’15 (43), Byron Tomcik ’15 (44) and Miguel Castello ’13 (38). This was the teams best score of the season. Crawford and Castello shared match medalist honors with terrific two over par 38s.
 
First Baseball
The Black and Gold notched a victory defeating Choate by a score of 5-4. Aaron Ugalde ’12 pitched a complete game, striking out five and yielding just three hits over the seven frames. He also doubled in the sixth as part of a big three-run surge that was precipitated by a quintessential gap double off the bat of Drew Leach ’13 which cleared the loaded bases. Additional hits were provided by Evan Neugold ’12, Nick Finn ’12, Brad Gioia ’12, Colin Cross ’12, and Mike McNally ’14. Cross scored the winning run on a wild play in the Choate infield involving a disrupted pick-off attempt at first.
 
First Girls’ Tennis
The Martlets earned two wins this week over Porter’s 7-0 and Choate 5-2. Against Porter’s,
the team played well top to bottom, with all of the girls winning their matches in straight sets. The match against the Wild Boars could have gone either way with a number of close contests. At No. 1, Skyy McGeachy-Campbell ’13, and at No. 3, Kathleen Gudas ’12, both had straight sets wins, though Gudas’ match was still a close one. At No. 4, Lia Petersen ’14 won 7-5 in the third set. One of the best matches was at No. 2 doubles, where Emily Teschner ’12 and Haley Lowenstein ’13 split the first two sets, 7-6, 3-6, but regained confidence to win the third, 6-2. Christi DeSimone ’12 and Emily Wigdale ’13 were in control of their match throughout, winning in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.
