Sports Highlights 05.07.2012

First Girls’ Lacrosse
The Martlets had a three-game week and were victorious in every contest, defeating Ethel Walker, Suffield and Kingswood Oxford. In all three games, the Black and Gold were dominant offensively. Leading the team against Ethel Walker, Meaghan O’Herron ’12 notched fived goals, and Brooke Heron ’12 had a hat trick. Heron earned another one against Suffield, and Alana Carpenter ’12 was impressive with four goals. In the final game of the week, O’Herron again added four goals, and Heron and Kaitlin Tse ’14 added two each. Molly O’Sullivan ’12 was strong in goal all week long, and Eleni Tebano ’13 played particularly well on defense.
 
Second Girls’ Lacrosse
Westminster got into a groove this week with three wins over Ethel Walker, Suffield and Kingswood Oxford. In each game, the Martlets controlled the game from the offensive end. Sarah Holmes ’13 led the team with 11 goals for the week. Also scoring multiple goals in at least one game were Katie Hovey ’14, Emma Conlon ’13, Megan Walsh ’14, Katie O’Connor ’15, Emily Mell ’14, Ginny Durfee ’15 and Nina Wilmderding '15. Abby Reed ’14 played well in goal all week long.
 
Third Girls’ Lacrosse
In their only game of the week, Westminster took on Hotchkiss and won 12-2. Alyssa DiMaria ’15 was solid on the draw control and led the team with three goals. Kelsey MacKenzie ’14, Olivia Durham ’15, Sarah Stevens ’15 and Alaina Bisson ’15 added two each. The Martlets worked well together as a team moving the ball up the field. Eugenia Naamon ’14, Olivia Tawney ’15 and Emma Filler ’15 played well on defense with a highlight of Filler’s interception of an eight-meter shot in the second half.
 
First Boys’ Lacrosse
The Martlets had a big overtime win over Loomis. In a defensive battle, the game was 3-2 Westminster at the half, and Westminster led 4-2 at the start of the fourth. Loomis fought hard, however, getting it tied at 4 with 1:55 remaining. The Westminster man-down team put terrific pressure on Loomis’ shooters all day, fighting off nine of 10 penalties including a big 6 v 4 stop in the fourth. Greg Pietroforte ’12 scored three goals, including the game winner at 2:38 of OT for the 5-4 win.
 
Second Boys’ Lacrosse
Westminster held off a late Loomis surge for an 8-7 victory. Sam Pope ’12 (2g, 1a), Gavin Durham ’13 (2g) and Ryan Seymour ’14 (1g, 2a) led the Martlet offense. Patrick Holowesko ’12 anchored the Martlet defense with a strong performance in the net, making big saves and clearing the ball well down field. Austin Pope ’14, Riley Bitterli ’14 and Cullen Matt ’13 also did an excellent job on defense. Drew Simeon ’15 earned the game ball for his great play all over the field, coming up with ground balls, playing solid on-ball defense and pushing the ball in transition to create opportunities.
 
Third Boys’ Lacrosse
The Martlets traveled to Indian Mountain and won a very exciting game that went right down to the final minute of play. Scoring for Westminster were Mario Benicky’14, Dan Parsons ’13, Miller Guth ’15, Zac Hamilton ’14, Sean Orlando ’13 and Joey Oh ’15. Hamilton notched the game winner with 12 seconds left to play. The defense played great in the second half, particularly Alvin Heumann ’14 and Mark Pfister ’14, who combined to shut down IMS’s top scorer, and Vinny Gisonti ’13 who dominated the groundballs and had a number of huge takeaways down the stretch. Ben Baucherio ’14 did a good job in goal.
 
First Golf
Playing on their home course of Simsbury Farms, the First Golf team came away with wins over NMH and Pomfret. The final scores were Westminster (208), NMH (212) and Pomfret (223). The Martlets were led by co-medalists Jack Rubino ’13 (39) and David Hallisey ’13 (39). Other Westminster scores included Derek Leydecker ’15 (40), Phillipe Morin ’15 (44), Daniel Snyder ’13 (46) and Nathalie Filler ’12 (48).
 
First Softball
The Martlets had wins this week over Ethel Walker, Berkshire and Pomfret. Brooke Wolejko ’14 had two doubles, a three-run home run and six RBIs to lead the Martlets to an impressive win against Ethel Walker. Sydney Daniels ’13, Alli Devins ’13, and Kat Pate ’14 added three hits and two RBIs apiece, and Amanda Savino ’14 pitched a gem, striking out six and allowing just four singles. In their 12-5 win over Berkshire, Rachel Monroe ’14 and Wolejko had three hits apiece and also made some strong fielding plays to lead the Martlets. Daniels, Jordan Gowdy ’14, Pate, Devins, and Savino also contributed key hits in the victory. Pate had four hits and Wolejko drove a homer over the left field fence and had three runs batted-in to lead the Martlets to an 18-0 win over Pomfret. Hayley Ahouse ’13 pitched very well and earned the win. On Sunday, Gowdy and Savino represented Westminster in the New England All Star Game. Gowdy played well in the field, and Savino pitched two scoreless innings to lead their team to an 8-1 victory.
 
Second Softball
In their second outing of the season, the Martlets hosted Rumsey and came away with a great 8-6 win. Jade Marlowe ’15 and Marissa Eklund ’13 pitched well for Westminster to secure the victory.
 
Second Girls’ Tennis
The Martlets were dominant against Kingswood Oxford, winning 7-0, without dropping a set. Natalie Biedron ’12, Julia Cooper ’15, Annie Lacey ’14, and Mimi Connelly ’15 were victorious in the singles matches. The doubles pairings of Ellie Baker ’12 and Elena Kim ’12, Shelby Cranshaw ’12 and Claire Egan ’14, and Cara Dealy ’13 and Caty Pooley ’13 were particularly effective against the Wyverns.
 
Boys’ Track and Field
In their tri-meet with Hopkins and Williston, the Martlets got off to a tough start after being disqualified in the 4x100-meter relay but quickly took the lead by taking the top four places in both discus and shot put. With the help of Jay Attys ’12 coming in first place in the 100 M dash and Emit Shipway ’12 taking first in 1500 M, the boys’ team maintained the lead for the rest of the meet. The meet highlight was David Carter ’15 breaking the 40-foot mark for the triple jump by seven-and-a-half inches, scoring another first place for the team. The final score was Westminster 104.5, WNH 36.5; Westminster 87, Hopkins, 50.
