Sports Highlights 04.30.2012

First Boys’ Tennis
The Martlets defeated Williston 7-0 in truly dominant fashion. The boys won all three doubles matches and swept the singles matches without losing a set. Emil Henry ’12 came out on top 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1, Sandro Giacometti ’12 prevailed 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2, and Charlie Russell ’14 won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3. John Vantine ’13 won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4 followed by Andrew Bell’s ’14 victory 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5 and, finally, Dillan Gomes,’12 won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6.
 
Second Boys’ Tennis
The Canterbury match (7-0) went well with every player winning in both singles and doubles. In the doubles matches, Dan Roberts ’14/Peter Tang ’12 and Carlo Comia ’14/Clay Cadiuex ’13 both won 8-0. In singles, Comia won 6-1, 6-0, Tang won 6-0, 6-0 and Asante Aseidu ’12 was victorious at 6-0, 6-1.
 
Third Tennis
The Martlets grabbed their first win of the season with a 4-3 victory over Renbrook.
At No. 4 singles, Erik Rost ’14 won a critical singles match for Westminster to get the Martlets on the board. The Black and Gold then swept the remaining doubles matches. At No. 1 doubles, Ryan Fox ’14 and Phil Song ’15 were an excellent combination winning 6-2. At No. 2 doubles, Ben Kleinschmidt ’14 and co-captain Laura Tingley ’13 were another strong combination, playing well and also earning a 6-2 win. The match was left to co-captain Gage Kennie ’13 and Mike Gao ’14, who joined forces at No. 3 doubles. Gao was fearless at net, and Kennie hit a game-finishing shot down the backhand line to get a 6-3 win for themselves and a 4-3 win for the team.
 
Second Girls’ Tennis
The Martlets beat Suffield Academy 5-2, advancing their record to 3-4. The doubles teams all won in straight sets. Captain Ellie Baker ’12 and Elena Kim ’12 at No. 1, Claire Egan ’14 and Mimi Connelly ’15 at No. 2, and Shelby Cranshaw ’12 and Caty Pooley ’13 at No. 3 all had convincing wins. The singles matches proved much more difficult, however. Each match went to three sets, making for an exciting afternoon for those watching. Annie Lacey ’14 at No. 3 won the first, lost the second and stormed back to take the third 6-3. At No. 4, Cara Dealy ’13 was also ultimately victorious after splitting sets 6-3 and 2-6.
 
Second Boys’ Lacrosse
On a windy Friday afternoon, the Martlets outscored Eaglebrook 12-8. It was a back and forth game until late in the third, when Westminster pushed its lead to two on a huge goal by George Brown ’15 off an assist from Eli Zempsky ’15. Eaglebrook fought back to get within one goal in the fourth quarter for their last time, as the Martlets scored the last three goals of the game. The Martlets out ground balled Eaglebrook 45-32, out shot Eaglebrook 30-22 and lost the save battle 8-14. Co-game ball winners Ryan Seymour ’14 (4 G 2 A and great riding) and Drew Poling ’13 (4 G and great FO work) led the Martlets in scoring, but were helped by Lorin Tobey ’15 (3 G 2 A), Sam Pope ’12 (1 G), Brown (1 G) and Zempsky (2 A). Patrick Holwesko ’12 made eight huge saves and helped on the clears.
 
Third Boys’ Lacrosse
The Martlets soundly defeated the Kingswood Oxford JV team by a score of 6-1. After giving up a fast-break goal off the opening faceoff, the Martlets maintained possession of the ball for almost the rest of the game. In the second quarter, Sean Orlando ’13 scored on an extra-man opportunity, but despite controlling the play, Westminster went into the half knotted 1-1 with the Wyverns. The second half was a different story, as the Martlets scored five unanswered goals to cruise to the victory. Zac Hamilton ’14 had three and Teddy Swenson’ 15 and Morgan Heck ’14 each had one.
 
Second Girls’ Lacrosse
The Martlets were in control against Taft from the opening whistle on their way to an 18-6 win. Westminster was ahead 6-0 within the first 10 minutes. They played with intensity, coming up with every ground ball and many of the draws. Sarah Holmes ’13 had a solid game with two goals while Katie O'Connor ’15 had five goals. Megan Walsh ’14 and Ellie Deveaux ’14 each had three, while Cricket DiGaloma ’14, Emma Conlon ’13, Katie Hovey ’14, Madeline Purdy ’13 and Thiele Schroeder ’14 each had one. Emily Mell ’14 had a personal best for this game and never stopped working hard on both offense and defense.
 
Third Girls’ Lacrosse
Without any substitutes, the Martlets had to give all that they had for a win over Loomis. After a big defensive stop to start the game by goalie Cristina Lynch ’15 (4 saves), the Martlets never looked back. Up 10-1 at the half, Westminster finished 13-4. Leading the offense was Alyssa DiMaria ’15 with four goals and Kelsey MacKenzie ’14 with a hat trick. Olivia Durham ’15 and Alaina Bisson ’15 had two apiece, and Alexa Armour ’14 and Kate Breed ’15 each added a goal. Eugenia Naamon ’14, Emma Filler ’15 and Olivia Tawney ’15 were a stalwart trio on defense. Sarah Stevens ’15 did a nice job controlling the draw, which was essential to the win.
 
Boys’ Track and Field
Westminster competed in a quad meet with Berkshire, Canterbury and Trinity-Pawling and emerged victorious over all three opponents. Important wins for the Black and Gold were the 800-meter dash where Travis Percy ’14 and Will Sprenker ’13 came in first and third place respectively to give their team the lead over Berkshire. The Martlets pulled away with the javelin, as Kadeem Ward ’12 and Kevin Murray ’13 came in second and third place behind. Following a tight race in the 3000 M, where Emmet Shipway ’12 was one-and-a-half seconds behind the first-place runner from Berkshire, Westminster finished the meet by coming in first place in the boys 4x100 meter relay, beating the second-place team, Canterbury, by over 10 seconds. It was an exciting win for the boys, as they new it was going to be a close one. The final results were Westminster 90, Berkshire 77, Canterbury 69 and Trinity Pawling, 32.
 
First Softball
The Martlets had a three-win week. After beating Kingswood Oxford soundly early in the week, Sydney Daniels ’13 and Rachel Monroe ’14 each had homeruns and drove in numerous RBIs to lead the Martlets over Gunnery, 20-2. Amanda Savino ’14 pitched a terrific game, allowing only three Gunnery singles, and Jade Marlowe ’15 pitched well in relief. Jordan Gowdy ’14 caught a strong game. In their third outing of the week, Savino was again dominant on the hill, allowing just four base hits. She also slammed a three-run homer to lead Westminster over a fine Millbrook team. Brooke Wolejko ’14, Kat Pate ’14 and Alli Devins ’13 were also hitting stars in the game. Wolejko and Pate doubled, singled and drove in two runs apiece. Devins had a run-scoring base hit in the second inning and three singles overall. The game was a close 2-0 contest until the fifth inning, when the Martlets exploded for seven runs. The game was also highlighted by many sparkling Westminster plays in the field. Wolejko threw out two base runners at home plate, with Gowdy applying successful tags on close plays. Gowdy also fired three bullets to Monroe to erase the Mustang attempts to steal or advance.
 
First Golf
On an overcast and showery day at Simsbury Farms, the First Golf team came away with a 210-217 victory over Choate to move to 6-2 for the season. Leading the way for the Martlets were David Hallisey ’13 (38) and Jack Rubino ’13 (39). Other Westminster scores included Xavier Morin ’13 (43), Phillipe Morin ’15 (45), Dan Snyder ’13 (45) and Nathalie Filler ’12 (47).
 
Second Golf
The Martlets earned a couple of victories this week over Avon and KO. Derek Leydecker ’15 led the team on both outings shooting a 42 and a 40. Other scorers were Herbert Cheng ’13, Will Swanson ’14, Bryson Tomcik ’15, McKenzie Hawkes ’15, Miguel Castello ’13 and George Crawford ’15.
