Sports Highlights 04.23.2012

First Boys’ Tennis
The Martlets earned two wins this week over Suffield, 4-3, and Gunnery, 7-0. Against the Tigers, the singles matches were the deciding factor as Westminster won four matches to secure the victory. Emil Henry ’12 was impressive at No. 1 and did not lose a game. Charlie Russell ’14 won 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3, and Cam Kurtz ’12 came out on top 6-3, 6-1 at No, 4. Andrew Bell ’14 clinched the win at No. 6, 6-3, 6-2. Against the Gunnery, the Black and Gold swept the opposition, winning the doubles point and every singles match. Bell won the closest match of the day 6-3, 7-6 (13-11). The team now has a 4-1 record.
 
First Girls’ Tennis
With wins over Williston (7-0) and Kent (5-2), the Martlets moved to 3-2 for the season. Against the Wildcats, the matches were all straight-set victories except at No. 1 doubles. Earning two victories for Westminster this week were Skyy McGeachy-Campbell ’13 at No. 2 singles, Kathleen Gudas ’12 at No. 3 singles and Lia Petersen ’14 at No. 4 singles. In doubles, Emily Teschner ’12 and Haley Lowenstein ’13 at No. 1 were pushed to three sets but won the match. Julie LeBlanc ’13 and Julia Cooper ’15 were also victorious at the No. 2 spot.
 
Second Girls’ Tennis
The Martlets managed two wins this week over Williston, 7-0, and Kent, 5-2. Mimi Ryan ’12 and Natalie Biedron ’12, at No. 1 and No 2 singles, were dominant in both matches, prevailing in two sets. Particularly impressive against the Lions, at No. 2 doubles, Claire Egan ’14 and Mimi Connelly ’15 dropped only one game. The No. 3 doubles duo of Shelby Cranshaw ’12 and Caty Pooley ’13 also played well, winning a competitive match 6-4, 6-2.
 
Second Golf
The Martlets earned two wins this week over Berkshire and Salisbury. In their 225-257 victory against the Bears, Derek Leydecker ’15 led the squad with a 43. In the matchup with Salisbury, Will Swanson ’14 was match medalist shooting a 43.
 
First Softball
After a dominant win over Loomis and a tough one-run loss to Taft, the Martlets prevailed 12-1 over Canterbury. Rachel Monroe ’14 singled, doubled and tripled to lead the Martlets. Sydney Daniels ’13 added three singles and had two RBIs, while Kat Pate ’14, Brooke Wolejko ’14 and Hayley Ahouse ’13 each blasted triples for Westminster. Amanda Savino ’13 pitched a terrific game, allowing only five Canterbury base hits. Wolejko, Michela Gozzi ’13 and Daniels played well defensively for Westminster, and Jordan Gowdy ’14 caught a strong game.
 
Second Softball
The Martlets won their first game of the season with a 21-5 decision over Berkshire. Jade Marlowe ’15 pitched well for Westminster. One highlight of the game was a 9-3-2 putout at home plate by Susie Black ’15, Marissa Eklund ’13 and captain Gwen Pastor ’12.
 
First Girls’ Lacrosse
Westminster controlled the game against Kent from the opening draw, ultimately winning 18-4. Brooke Heron ’12 and Lindsay Hanau ’13 each netted five goals. Alana Carpenter ’12 and Rachel Kennedy ’12 finished with two apiece, while Tyler O'Neil ’12, Annie French ’13, Tori DeAngleis ’14 and Kaitlin Tse ’14 each notched a goal. The Martlets defense held Kent scoreless in the second half. Molly O’Sullivan ’12 had five saves for the day.
 
First Boys’ Lacrosse
After getting down in the first half to a fired up Trinity-Pawling squad, the Martlets responded in the third quarter with four unanswered goals and took the lead. The Pride did stage a comeback but it was not enough, and the Martlets held on for the 8-7 win. Will Gould ’12 had four groundballs and one assist, and Dillon Tiner ’12 grabbed seven groundballs. Tim Lyons ’12 helped create numerous T-P turnovers, and Gordon Santry ’12 had some big saves, while Greg Pietroforte ’12 and Alec Dunn’13 were big on the clears. The Martlets now stand at 5-2 for the season.
 
Second Boys’ Lacrosse
The Martlets earned two big wins this week over Salisbury, 5-3, and Trinity-Pawling, 13-5.
In both games, the Martlets were in control of the play. Against Salisbury, the game ball went to Ryan Seymour ’14 (1 G, 1 A) for his all-around control of play, and he was joined in scoring by Lorin Tobey ’15 (1 G, 2 A), Drew Poling ’13 (1 G, 1 A), Preston Miller ’13 (1 G), Keegan Giordano ’15 (1 G) and Sam Pope ’12 (1 A). Great leadership was supplied by game captains Riley Bitterli ’14 and Angel Guerrero ’12 which helped focus the team. Against T-P, there were nine different goal scorers with Gavin Durham ’13, Poling, Pope and Tobey scoring twice. Game balls went to Avery Leveston ’15 and Austin Pope ’14 for their all-around play on face-offs and between the restraining lines, making TP put the ball on the ground and then get it up and move it to the attack.
 
Third Boys’ Lacrosse
The Martlets grabbed their first wins of the season against Taft, 9-3, and Kent, 7-4. Against the Rhinos, eight different players scored, with Anthony DiPlacido ’15 finding the net twice.
In their battle with the Lions, Morgan Heck ’14 led the attack with three goals, Vinny Ginsonti ’13 dominated the ground balls, and defenseman Eric Glover ’15 shut down the Kent attack all day long on the way to a solid victory.
