Sports Highlights — 04.07.2012

First Softball
In the team’s opening game, Jordan Gowdy ’14 had a grand slam home run and drove in six runs to lead the Martlets to a 19-4 win over Williston. Amanda Savino ’14 pitched well, allowing just six Williston base hits. Savino, Brooke Wolejko ’14, and Kat Pate ’14 had three hits apiece to help power the Westminster offense.
 
First Baseball
The Martlets went 2-1 for the week with wins in their first two games against KO 6-1 and Kent 5-2. Against the Wyverns, Drew Leach ’13 pitched well striking out nine. Tyler Buckley ’15 went 3 for 4 with an RBI and Alex Tomashoff ’13 had a double and an RBI. Other hits came from Nick Finn ’12, Evan Neugold ’12, Leach, Aaron Ugalde ’12 and Brad Gioia ’12. In their second game of the week, the Martlets played well defensively and made the most of their opportunities on offense. Providing hits for Westminster were Ryan Strange ’13, Evan Neugold ’12 (2-4), and Tomashoff with a key double. Aaron Uglade ’12 started on the mound and pitched well. Finn closed out both games in commanding fashion.
 
Second Baseball
The Martlets opened their season with a 9-4 victory over Kent. Nick Rocco ’15 struck out 16 Lions, and Westminster did a good job of shutting Kent down offensively near the end of the game. Will Schmidt ’13 had a triple, Brian Kelleher ’15 (who was solid behind the plate) went 2-4 with two runs scored, and Tim Chartier ’14 went 2-3 with a single and a triple, two runs scored and an RBI.
 
First Boys’ Lacrosse
The Martlets improved to 2-0 with a solid win at Suffield Academy in a game led by tough, on-ball defense. The Black and Gold moved well off the ball that made for 16 assisted goals of the 19. Fourteen different players figured in the Westminster scoring effort while Tim Lyons ’12 and Alec Dunn ’13 helped secure many strong possessions with clears from the D end. Max Langlois ’13, Pierce Cote ’14 and Ben Shively ’14 all stepped up defensively as well, helping hold the hosts to zero goals in the second half. Will Gould ’12 (game ball) had seven groundballs to lead both teams.
 
First Girls’ Lacrosse
Westminster won its first game of the season against NMH 14-3. After initially finding themselves down one goal, the Martlets gained control of the game and never looked back.
The Westminster attack built an 8-1 lead at the half and continued its momentum into the second half. Alana Carpenter ’12, Annie French ’13, Brooke Heron ’12, Rachel Kennedy ’12, Eliza Christman ’15, Lindsay Hanau ’12, and Meaghan O'Herron ’12 all scored goals in the victory. Defensively, the Martlets saw strong play from Annie French, Nina Gozzi ’12, Madison Caan ’13 and Hadley DesMeules ’12. Molly O'Sullivan ’12 finished with seven saves for the day.
 
Third Girls’ Lacrosse
The Martlets traveled to Loomis for their first game of the season and came away with a 9-5 win. The team came out strong from the beginning and dominated the first half, 7-2. The Pelicans responded early in the second, but with 10 minutes remaining, the Martlets regained control and finished well. Scoring goals for the Martlets were Alexa Armour ’14 (1), Olivia Durham ’15 (1), Kelsey MacKenzie ’14 (3), Alyssa DiMaria ’15 (3) and Alaina Bisson ‘15 (1). Cristina Lynch ’15 also had an excellent day playing in goal for the first time.
