The Bindlestiff Family Cirkus Comes to Town

An exciting and captivating circus show of jugglers, clowns, acrobats and aerialists by the Bindlestiff Family Cirkus is coming to Westminster School on March 27 for performances in the Werner Centennial Center. There will be a morning performance for the Westminster School community as a part of the Graham Gund ’59 Visiting Artist Series, and a public performance at 8 p.m. for which tickets may be purchased at www.brownpapertickets.com/event/221425

Every Bindlestiff Family Cirkus show features a “family” of world-class entertainers who perform exciting and captivating feats of circus. Ringmistress Philomena (Stephanie Monseu, co-founder of the Bindlestiff Family Cirkus) hosts the grand stage spectacle with the musical accompaniment of Cirkestra, the nation’s greatest original circus-dedicated orchestra. Cirkestra is led by Ringling Clown College graduate and Boston Berklee College of Music instructor Peter Bufano on his accordion.

The March 27 circus cast will also feature the legendary King Charles Troupe, which performs high-energy unicycle tricks and skillful basketball stunts. Jerry King, who created the first featured African American act in Ringling Brothers & Barnum and Bailey Circus, will perform with the King Charles Troupe. In addition, Mike “Richterscale” Richter will attempt to walk a wire spanning across the length of the stage. Mr. Pennygaff (Keith Nelson, co-founder of the Bindlestiff Family Cirkus) will demonstrate his classic sword-swallowing routine, and Philomena’s target bullwhip act will snap an audience member into the spotlight. And lastly, Ekaterina, a contortionist, acrobat and aerialist, will perform an amazing aerial display, and Adam Kuchler will juggle and stack his cigar boxes into feats of masterful manipulation.

For 18 years, the Bindlestiff Family Cirkus has been presenting the variety arts — circus, sideshow and vaudeville — to audiences across America and around the world. It spells circus with a “k” to pay tribute to the rich heritage of European one-ring spectacle and because it weaves the threads of American vaudeville and sideshow into a rich tapestry. It is not your Grandpa’s circus!
