Students Participate in Math Tournament

Seven Westminster students traveled to Harvard to participate in the 15th annual Harvard-MIT Mathematics Tournament on Feb. 11. The students — Tom Dudzik ’15, Kevin Huang ’13, Hansong Li ’13, Taite Puhala ’14, Daniel Parsons ’13, Peter Tang ’12 and Gary Yang ’13 — are all members of the Westminster Math Club, which has been meeting faithfully every Wednesday under the leadership of president Peter Tang.

The students started the morning at the tournament by taking three 50-minute individual tests in algebra, geometry and combinatorics. Next, was the team round, consisting of five short-answer problems and five proofs, covering a variety of topics. After lunch, they finished up the day with the Guts Round, a fast-paced competition held in one of the large lecture rooms in the science center.

The tournament, which is organized and run entirely by Harvard and MIT undergraduates, provided the Westminster contingent with a wonderful opportunity to tackle extremely challenging math problems and compete against more than 100 teams from around the country and abroad.
