Students Visit Historic Sites in New York City

Fourteen students from Assistant Headmaster Nancy Spencer’s The Outsider Experience in American History class visited some historic sites in New York City on Feb. 9. They are currently studying immigrants and their children/grandchildren and the relationship of how their assimilation into American culture affects the experience of being outsiders in American society.

They began their day by taking a ferry from Liberty Park, N.J., to Ellis Island, where they toured the Grand Hall, the Registry Room and all the amazing exhibits. A number of students looked up their family names and found their ancestors who came through Ellis Island.

Next, they took the ferry to Battery Park, N.Y., where they watched a street performance and then visited the new 9/11 Memorial, which was quite moving. Their last adventure was a 90-minute walking tour of the Lower East Side. Starting in Chinatown, they walked through Little Italy and crossed Delancy Street on their way, with stops at a pastry shop and candy store. Their tour guide told them lots of interesting stories and anecdotes about old New York.
