Sports Highlights 01.30.2012

First Girls’ Hockey
After a hard-fought tie against Hotchkiss early in the week, the Martlets earned two wins against Williston and the Gunnery. Despite Westminster going up 3-0, Williston never quit and made the Martlets play to the final buzzer for the 4-2 win. Rachel Kennedy ’12 led the team with two goals, and Alli Devins ’13 and Sydney Daniels ’13 had one apiece. Brooke Wolejko ’14 was outstanding in goal for the entire game. The Gunnery proved to be an even greater test for the Martlets, who emerged with the 2-1 decision. After one, the score remained stuck at 0-0. But in the second, the combination of Kennedy to Daniels to Devins broke the scoring open. A physical Gunnery team pushed the Martlets mentally and physically to keep fighting. The Martlets were able to score the game winner on a 5-3 powerplay goal by Eleni Tebano ’13. Emily Wigdale ’13 earned the victory in goal.

Second Girls’ Hockey
The Martlets eked out a 3-2 win against an always-tough Canterbury team. Westminster outscored the Saints three to zero in the first two periods and managed to hold onto the lead, outlasting Canterbury, despite a two-goal rally in the third period. Captain Tyler O'Neil ’12 broke the scoring open, and Dominica Park ’14 knocked home a rebound for the second Martlet goal. Ellie Deveaux ’14 scored what would be the game winner late in the second period. Jenn Girard ’14 had 12 saves in net. The Martlets move to 7-0-1 for the season.

Swimming and Diving
The Boys’ Swimming and Diving team posted three victories for the week against Williston, Canterbury, and Wilbraham and Monson and got faster with each race with many swimmers achieving lifetime bests. Winners this week included Jake Cahill ’12 (200 IM and 100 Breaststroke), Henry Chou ’14 (100 Fly), Conor Mullen ’12 (200 Free, 500 Free, 200 IM) Herbert Cheng ’13 (100 Backstroke), Josh Kokluis (500 Free), Patrick Holowesko ’12 (50 Free and 100 Breakstroke) and Emil Henry ’12 (50 Free and 100 Free). On Saturday, the 200 Medley Relay team of co-captain Cahill, Holowesko, Chou and Henry won the meet with their fastest time of the season. Newcomer James Hsieh ’14 took first in the diving event with his best score yet. With the depth and commitment of the team, the swimmers continue to push each other to race their fastest.

The Girls’ Swimming and Diving team earned its first win of the season with a victory over Canterbury. Natalie Biedron ’12, Emily Kunsman ’14, Sarah Holmes ’13, and co-captain Emily Teschner ’12, started the meet well with a first place finish in the 200 Medley Relay. Sarah Dimmitt ’12 was in control of the diving from start to finish, totaling her highest score of the year, good for new school and pool records. Other individual wins went to Kunsman (200 IM) and Holmes (100 Fly). A number of new swimmers also continue to improve and gain speed and confidence in the pool.
