Students Participate in Yale Model United Nations Conference

For the fourth year in a row, Westminster participated in the Yale Model United Nations (YMUN) conference from Jan. 19-23. This was the largest Westminster delegation, with 28 students attending. The group was a mixture of novice and experienced participants, ranging from Fourth to Sixth Formers. For this conference, Westminster had the opportunity to represent Brazil, Romania and Switzerland.

As in past years, it was a hectic weekend with students involved in committees from Thursday evening to Sunday morning. Highlights included a keynote address by social activist Dr. Sarah Nutt, exciting and engaging committee debates, the traditional YMUN delegate dance, and a significant snowstorm that made wandering around Yale and New Haven an unusual experience.

Students served on committees as large as 150 and as small as 20. Topics discussed varied from the Euro economic crisis, to nuclear proliferation to the crisis in Sudan. For many students, this was their first exposure to MUN and there was a steep learning curve as they pushed themselves to defend their country’s positions in front of a large group, formed alliances, and drafted working papers and resolutions. It was exciting to see students return from committee proud of themselves and their accomplishments and anxious to discuss their day.

Westminster MUN president Donald Sonn ’12 earned honorable mention for his performance in the Economic and Finance Committee representing Romania. He was one of six students who received recognition in a group numbering more than 100.

Most of Westminster’s YMUN participants will have the opportunity to build on this experience and further hone their skills when they attend the Boston MUN conference in February.
