Sports Highlights 01.09.2011

First Girls’ Squash
The Martlets began 2012 with a solid win against nearby rival Loomis 5-2. The Black and Gold took each of the first-round matches in three games, with the wins earned by Eliza Worcester ’13 at No. 6, Alex Regan ’13 at No. 4 and Ginny Durfee ’15 at No. 2. The match was decided early in round two, as Cricket di Galoma ’14 at No. 3 and Lauren Darnis ’12 at No. 5 each earned three game wins of their own.
 
Second Girls’ Squash
In their first match of the new year, Second Girls’ Squash defeated Loomis by a 6-1 score. In the first round of matches, co-captain Mimi Ryan ’12 won in four games at No. 2, and Hayley Lowenstein ’13 at No. 4 and Lia Petersen ’14 at No. 6 also won in the first round of matches to give the visiting Martlets a 3-0 advantage. In the second round, co-captain Emily Moran ’12 at No. 3, Annie French ’13 at No. 5 and Karlie Werdmolder ’13 at No. 7 were also victorious to clinch the victory.
 
First Boys’ Hockey
The Martlets won all three of the games they played in what was a busy week for First Boys’ Hockey. In the 5-2 win against Kent, Nick Finn ’12 scored two goals and Ryan Mowery ’13, Emilio Audi ’12 and David Hallisey notched one apiece. The Black and Gold were victorious by the same score against Brunswick in a Friday night duel. Co-captain Chris Izmirlian ’12 got the Martlets started, who never seemed to look back. Hallisey scored two, Audi added another and Izmirlian put the final nail in the Bears’ coffin. Westminster traveled to Trinity-Pawling for its last game of the week and came away with a 6-3 win. Hallisey (2), Audi, Finn, Sean Orlando ’13, and Vince Gisonti ’13 all figured in on the offensive end. Co-captain Patrick Spano ’12 played well in net for the Martlets throughout the week’s matchups.
 
Second Boys’ Hockey
The Second Boys’ Hockey team earned their second victory in overtime, defeating Trinity-Pawling (TP) 4-3. Mario Benicky ’14 scored the first two goals for the Martlets and Will Sprenker ’13 notched the third of the first period. TP tied the game at 3-3 in the third, which pushed the game into extra time. After a slow start in the overtime period, Tommy Griffith ’14 freed the puck to linemate, Pierce Cote ’14, who feathered a pass to Dan Roberts ’14. Roberts backhanded a shot into the goal for the winning score.
 
First Girls’ Basketball
After a long break over the holidays, the Martlets won both of their games this week. After being down early against, Greenwich, the Black and Gold went on a 12-0 run to finish the first half, which contributed to an eventual 31-23 win. The Martlets also pulled out a hard-fought win over Ethel Walker 43-39. Meg Richard ’15 played well in both games and led the team against Ethel Walker with 24 points, 12 rebounds and eight steals. Annie Lacey ’14, Rachel Monroe ’14, Laura Tingley ’13 and Charlotte Gould ’13 each had good games this week as well.
 
First Girls’ Hockey
The Marlets dispatched of both of their opponents this week in games on the road. Against Greenwich, Westminster got out to a quick start and never relented finishing with an impressive 6-0 win. The team had a slower start against Taft but could not be stopped once they turned on the pressure. The Martlets again refused to relinquish a goal, finishing 4-0. Leading the team offensively this week, Alli Devins ’13 earned a hat trick against Greenwich. Molly O’Sullivan ’12 scored two goals against Taft, and Nina Gozzi ’12 had a goal and three assists on the week. Also finding the cage in one of the two games was Rachel Kennedy ’12, Eleni Tebano ’13 and Brooke Heron ’12. Brooke Wolejko ’14 and Emily Wigdale ’13 both played well in goal, each earning a shutout.
 
Second Girls’ Hockey
The new year started well for the Martlets who earned a close victory, 2-1, against Simsbury High’s JV and then had a big win against NMH. Eliza Christman ’15 and Katie O'Connor ’15 scored in the first game of the week. Jenn Girard ’14 was solid in the net with nine saves. Against NMH, 10 different Martlets scored as Westminster dominated the game from the first whistle. The team did a nice job of passing the puck and controlling play. Of note, Iris Dayton ’13 and Nia Francis ’13 scored their first career goals for the Martlets.
 
Boys’ Swimming
The Boys’ Swimming and Diving team hosted Suffield and Milton in a double-dual meet and had an impressive win against Milton. The 200-Medley Relay team of co-captain Jake Cahill ’12, Patrick Holowesko ’12, Henry Chou ’14 and Emil Henry ’12 set the pace with a second-place finish. Henry swam his season-best time in the 50 Free to snatch second place before winning the 100 Freestyle. Chou added a season best time in the 100 Fly, good for second, and Josh Kokulis ’12 swam a tough race in the 500 Freestyle to place second. Cahill and Conor Mullen ’12 placed second and third, respectively, in the 100 Backstroke.
 
First Boys’ Basketball
Traveling to Pomfret, the Martlets pulled off a 47-41 win over the Griffins. Tim Lyons ’12 led the way for all scorers with 19 points and added several rebounds and assists. Marquez Cummings ’12 gave the team a boost with his harassing defense. Gordon Santry ’12 also provided a spark off the bench. Kevin Murray ’13 and Alex Tomashoff ’13 fought off the big men down low from Pomfret for the entire game.
 
First Boys’ Squash
The Martlets came home with two 7-0 victories on Saturday. Against Groton, a number of the matches were quite competitive. Down the ladder, Sandro Giacometti ’12 won 11-9 in the fifth game. Alvin Heumann ’14 lost his third game, but won in four. Harry Ganek ’14, who was pushed to a tie-breaker in his third game, and Ben Shively ’14 and Beau Orchard ’13 each won in three. Orchard was particularly stingy, allowing only 14 points to his opponent. At No. 2 Michael LeBlanc ’12 emerged victorious 17-15 in the fifth game in a back and forth match. At No. 1 Ahmed Abdel Khalek ’12 was pushed by his opponent and the match featured many nicks, lobs, hard drives, great gets and lots of hustle, but Abdel Khalek’s relentless retrieving and constant pressure was impossible to shake. After playing Groton, the Westminster boys paired off against Pomfret, playing all eight matches at once. All but one match was decided in three games. Abdel Khalek was particularly impressive at No.1, allowing only five points in a spirited, well-played match.
 
Second Boys’ Squash
The Second Boys’ Squash team defeated Suffield Academy 6-1 in an entertaining, hard-fought contest to move to 2-1 on the season. At No. 1, Reed Melhado ’14 was able to overcome a 1-2 deficit to win games four and five (10 and 4). Miguel Castello ’13 was a dominant presence in his match at No. 2 winning in three games. At No. 4, Will Swanson ’14 played a well-matched opponent, and after dropping the first game, won in four. Gavin Durham ’13 cruised to a victory at No. 7 (6, 4, 1) to secure the match for Westminster. Preston Miller ’13 ground out a win at No. 3 (9, 10, 5) and Willy Green ’12 rallied from a first game loss to win (5), 3, 6, 6 at No. 5.
