Sports Highlights 12.13.2011

First Boys’ Squash
The Black and Gold had a 3-1 week with 7-0 wins over Loomis, Berkshire, and the Hill School. Ahmed Abdel Khalek ’12 and Michael LeBlanc ’12 did not lose a game all week at No. 1 and No. 2. Alvin Huemann ’14, Harry Ganek ’14, Ben Shively ’14, and Beau Orchard ’13 also had wins this week.
 
Second Boys’ Squash
The Martlets won their second match of the season with a 6-1 victory over Avon. Winning in straight games for the Martlets were Will Swanson ’14 at No. 5, Willy Green ’12 at No. 4, Preston Miller ’13 at No. 3, and Miguel Castello ’13 at No. 1. Gavin Durham ’13 at No. 6 and Reed Melhado ’14 at No. 2 won hard-fought matches in four games apiece.
 
Third Boys’ Squash
Looking for their first win of the season, the Black and Gold were victorious 4-3 against Avon. Working up the ladder, the Martlets had key wins from the start from Ryan Fox ’14, Stephan Reyes ’14, Austen Tibbetts ’14 and Stephen Cox ’14. Andrew Bell ’14, Peter Tang ’12 and John Dowling ’14 were also winners; Bell persevered for a win in a five-game match. Fox and Tang won their matches in three straight games.
 
Second Boys’ Basketball
Westminster won two tight games this week. First, over Trinity-Pawling, two evenly matched teams sent the game into double overtime, where the Martlets eventually prevailed. In the extra periods, both squads did a good job of making their free throws, and ultimately the game came down to a big bucket by Max Langlois ’13 with two seconds remaining on the clock. Against Deerfield, the Martlets trailed most of the game but managed to even the score in the last minutes. Langlois and Cam Kurtz ’12 made key free throws to bring the victory home.
 
First Girls’ Squash
The Martlets had a strong start to the season with two wins this week. First over Millbrook, Christi DeSimone ’12 and Ginny Durfee ’15 at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, were dominant in winning their matches. Alex Regan ’13 and Lindsay Hanau ’13 also won in three games while Eliza Worcester ’13 was always in control at No. 5, although she did drop a game. The match against Westover was a closer affair. Durfee had the easiest day winning in the three, and Lindsay Hanau ’13 was able to top her opponent in four. The victory came down to two five-game matches that were gutted out by Lauren Darnis ’12 and Cricket di Galoma ’14.
 
Second Girls’ Squash
The Black and Gold notched two wins during the week. Westminster defeated Millbrook by a 7-0 score. Katherine Kelter ’14, Haley Lowenstein ’13 and Gaby Foti ’14 got the team off to a quick lead, each winning in three games. Emily Moran ’12, Mimi Ryan ’13, Annie French ’13 and Sophie Skinner ’15 were also victorious to earn the sweep. In a tighter match against Westover, the 6-1 score was deceiving. Some of matches were close and could have gone either way. Kelter was pushed to four games and Lowenstein won in five. Foti, Ryan, French and Skinner all won in three games.
 
First Girls’ Basketball
Westminster earned its first victory of the young season winning a home opener against Hopkins, 48-34. After a back-and-forth start, the Martlets pulled away near the end of the first half and then extended its lead in the second half and held off the Hilltoppers. Meg Richard ’15 led the team with 27 points. Rachel Monroe ’14 had nine points and co-captain Meaghan O'Herron ’12 had a career best six points. Laura Tingley ’13 stepped up with outstanding rebounding and interior defense. Offensive playmaker Charlotte Gould ’13 also played well on defense.
 
First Girls’ Hockey
The Black and Gold had a 2-0 week with wins over Kent and Loomis. Against the Lions, the Martlets held the visitors scoreless for a 3-0 win. Sydney Daniels ’13 led the offense with two goals. Emily Wigdale ’13 earned the shutout between the pipes. The Martlets struggled in the first period against Loomis but scored five goals in the second to put the game out of reach for the Pelicans. Daniels earned a hat trick on the day. The Martlet defense held Loomis to one goal in the first period. Rachel Kennedy ’12 also scored a goal in each game this week.
 
First Boys’ Hockey
The Martlets managed two wins for the week. Against Choate, Westminster struck first on a shot from Chris Izmirlian ’12 and then went up 2-1 when Emilio Audi ’12 jammed the puck home. The Wild Boars continued to fight and evened the scored. Nick Finn ’12 was able to put the Martlets ahead for good, and Izmirlian finished things off with an open net goal. Against Pomfret, the game was penalty-filled on both sides, but the Martlet special teams prevailed to earn the 3-1 win. Finn and Izmirlian again scored for the Martlets, and Vince Gisonti ’13 scored an open net goal near the end.
 
Second Boys’ Hockey
Second Boys’ Hockey won its first contest of the season with an exciting 3-2 overtime victory at Choate. Will Sprenker ’13 got the Martlets on the board first, and the Black and Gold went up 2-0 early in the second period thanks to Will Stevens ’12. The Wild Boars fought back and tied up the game, sending play into overtime. John Pappas ’14 would find the net for the game-winner. Miller Guth ’15 and Aaron Ugalde ’12 had a particularly strong game on the blue line for the Martlets.
