Sports Highlights — 10.10.2011

First Field Hockey
The Martlets remained unbeaten this week, adding two more wins to their record: a 3-1 victory over Miss Porter’s and a 4-1 win against Loomis. The Black and Gold played particularly well in the second game of the week against the Pelicans on the road and dominated the game outshooting Loomis 17-4. Kat Pate ’14 played well in goal with four saves. Eleni Tenbano ’13 led the scoring for the Martlets with a total of three goals for the week. Emily Moran ’12 added two against Loomis, while Rachel Kennedy ’12 and Brooke Wolejko ’14 added one.

Second Field Hockey
In their first game of the week, the Martlets shut out Miss Porter’s 4-0. Jordan Gowdy ’14 started the scoring for the Martlets and then Rachel Monroe ’14 and Emily Mell ’14 showed great composure on a broken up corner play to combine for the team’s second goal; Monroe had the assist and Mell drove the ball in for the goal. Alaina Bisson ’15 tapped the ball into the goal to put Westminster up 3-0 at the half. Dominica Park ’14 finished up the scoring for the Black and Gold.

Third Field Hockey
The Martlets started their season off well with a 2-0 win over Loomis. Captain Alexa Armour ’14 kicked off the scoring for Westminster, tipping in a goal after a scramble in front of the net. After numerous scoring opportunities, Amanda Savino ’15 capitalized in the second half with a redirect off of a strong cross by Katie O'Connor ’15. Goalies Olivia Tawney ’15 and Susie Black ’15 were aggressive and instrumental in keeping Loomis without a goal. In a game that was closer than the score indicated, the Martlets did an impressive job in their first outing.

First Football
First Football took an early lead, withstood an initial comeback, extended its lead and played great second-half red-zone defense to hold on for a 14-7 victory over Tabor Academy. Both Martlet touchdowns came when Miller Steinle ’12 connected with Tim Lyons ’12 down the field. The Martlet defense came up with some big stops in the second half to secure the win, including two key stops of Tabor drives that penetrated the Martlet 10-yard line. Westminster recorded five sacks, a blocked punt and created two turnovers. Co-captain Dillon Tiner ’12 had an interception and two sacks and fellow captain Andy Dines ’12 gained 64 yards rushing, making eight tackles including a sack and two more for losses, and defending two passes. Lyons added a long kickoff return, three tackles and two passes defensed. Kadeam Ward ’12 had 60 yards rushing and made seven tackles. Jamie Moross ’14 made his first start on defense and didn't disappoint, with six tackles and a pass defensed. Michael Natale ’14 blocked a punt and earned two sacks.

First Boys’ Soccer
The Martlets earned their first win of the season with a 2-0 victory over Kingswood Oxford. After a scoreless first half, thanks in part to Martlet goalie Jake Crow ’12,
Stan Sandoval ’13 scored twice in the span of two minutes to give the Martlets the win. Playing well on defense were Amory Beldock ’12, Connor Janson ’13 and Brandon Kumnick ’12, while co-captain Greg Jarvis ’13 was solid in the midfield.

Second Boys’ Soccer
The Black and Gold managed two wins during the week over Williston and Kingswood Oxford. The Martlets dominated both games. Against the Wildcats, the Martlets scored two goals on penalty kicks, one by Ryan Cholnoky ’12 and the other by Alec Dunn ’13. Gordon Santry ’12 tallied two goals and Mario Benicky ’14 had his first goal of the season. Against KO, a number of Martlets figured into the scoring, including Santry, Dunn, Miller Guth ’15, Jackson Price ’15, Drew Leach ’13 and Alvin Heumann ’14.

Third Boys’ Soccer
The Martlets continue to play well and had a terrific 5-2 win against Loomis. Despite controlling the game, Westminster found itself in a 2-2 tie at halftime. The second half was a completely different story as the Martlets dominated the play and shut down the Pelicans. John Vantine ’13 led with three goals in the game, and Evan Yenor ’13 and Ryan Mowery ’13 also scored for Westminster. Alastair Smith ’13 and Curtis Mackenzie ’12 played well in the Martlet victory.

Fourth Boys’ Soccer
Westminster earned an impressive 5-1 victory this week over a feisty and tenacious Deerfield squad. Stephen McCormick ’14 scored early for the Martlets, and the team never looked back. Mark Pfister ’14 added two goals in the effort, and Erik Rost ’14 and Reid Cameron finished off the scoring for the Black and Gold. Avery Leveston ’15 and Alex Connal ’15 controlled the middle of the field for the Martlets and George Crawford ’15 and Will Mayer 12 split duties in goal and played exceptionally well.

Second Girls’ Soccer
After playing well in some tough games, the Martlets earned a well-deserved 3-1 victory over Miss Porter’s. Alyssa Di Maria ’15 scored her first goal as a Martlet, and an aggressive Annie Mayer ’15 also scored. Katherine Kelter ’14 pressured Miss Porter’s throughout the game and finally earned a goal of her own to seal the win for Westminster.

Second Boys’ Cross Country
The Second Boys’ team ran an excellent race at the West Hartford reservoir against Kingswood Oxford and Williston, with 11 boys running their lifetime personal records and several others within seconds of their fastest times. The depth of the team was more than KO or WNH could match, and the Second Boys’ won both competitions. Leading the charge was Daniel Parsons ’13 who was followed by Third Form phenom, Aaron Rubin. Stalwart Ronald Yeung ’13 was No. 3, while surging Gary Yang ’13, was just behind Yeung. George Knight ’14 rounded out the scoring for the Black and Gold.
