Weekly Sports Highlights - May 9, 2011

First Boys’ Tennis
The Martlets earned two wins during the week. In a tight match against Kingswood Oxford, the teams split the singles matches with victories by Andrew Fu ’11 at No. 6, Cam Kurtz ’12 at No. 5 and Robbie Hamblett ’11 at No. 4. It came down to the doubles point, which Westminster took by winning all three matches. The Black and Gold had an easier time against Trinity-Pawling and came away with a 6-1 win. The Martlets were dominate in both singles and doubles action.

First Boys’ Lacrosse
Westminster continues to pull out some tough wins against strong opponents. Despite being up early in the game against Loomis, the Pelicans came storming back and tied the game at 7 in the fourth quarter. Luke Laszkiewcz’’11 was ultimately able to score the winning goal. Burt McGillivray ’11 came up big on defense and Gordon Santry ’12 (12 saves) had two big saves to preserve the win. On Saturday in a great lacrosse game in front of an enthusiastic reunion crowd, Westminster beat powerful Brunswick 12-9 in the first Headmaster's Cup (Tom and Bill Philip headmasters). Santry made 14 saves, and seven different Martlets scored in a game that Westminster led from 2-1 in the first quarter. Westminster stretched the lead to 9-5 after three quarters, but Brunswick would not go away, getting it to 10-8 with a few minutes remaining. Brad Woodruff ’11 (game ball) figured in each of Westminster's last three goals, however, to earn the win.

Second Boys’ Lacrosse
Westminster took to the rain-soaked fields of Loomis and came away with a hard-fought and team-earned 6-4 win to improve to 3-5 for the season. Max Langlois ’13, Sam Pope ’12 and Gardner Imhoff ’13 netted one goal each in the first half as the Black and Gold entered halftime tied with Loomis 3-3. Pope (2g) and Evan Neugold ’12 added one in the second half to give Westminster a 5-3 lead. Loomis pulled within one before Gavin Durham ’13 capped things off for Westminster.

First Golf
On a beautiful day at Simsbury Farms, First Golf came away with victories over NMH and Pomfret. Westminster posted the winning score with a total of 204, followed by NMH (216) and Pomfret (229). Harry Richards ’11 and David Hallisey ’13 both shot scores of 39 to share medalist honors. Other Westminster scores included Nathalie Filler ’12 (40), Max O'Connor ’11 (42), Carter Walsh ’11 (44) and Jack Rubino ’13 (48).

First Girls’ Tennis
The Martlets came away with two victories this week. Against Williston, the Black and Gold did not drop a match, proving dominant in both singles and doubles play. KO proved to be a bit more of a challenge, especially at the top of the ladder. The Martlets showed they were the deeper squad, however. Winning at No. 3 and No. 4 singles were Olivia Frank ’11 and Kathleen Gudas ’12. In doubles, Carolyn Zimmer ’11 and Katherine Kelter ’14 won 6-2, 6-1 at No.1, while No. 2 Steph Werner ’11 and Nina Grey ’11 did well handling many high lobs and deep shots to win 7-5, 6-4. At No.3 doubles, Libby Kelter ’12 and Hannah Leathers ’11 had the best overall match of the day, winning 6-2, 2-6, 6-2.

Second Girls’ Tennis
The Second Girls' Tennis team defeated Kingswood Oxford 7-0. Electra Walker ’14, Christi DeSimone ’12, Mimi Ryan ’12, and Lulu Spalding ’12 earned victories in the singles positions, while Emily Teschner ’12 and Sayre Reimer ’13, Haley Lowenstein ’13 and Annie Lacey ’14, and Elena Kim ’12 and Ellie Baker ’12 won in doubles.

First Softball
The Martlets remained undefeated with two victories this week. Westminster managed a 4-0 win over a good Suffield team. Leading the squad offensively was Sydney Daniels ’13, Brittany Sutton ’11 and Amanda Boulier ’11. Carmen MacDonald ’11, Rachel Farrel ’11, Boulier and Rachel Monroe ’14 each made key plays in the infield, and Sutton played well on the mound, striking out 11 Suffield batters and allowing only three base hits. In a 16-0 victory against Pomfret, Sutton pitched a prefect game and struck out 12 batters. Farrel, Boulier, Monroe, Brooke Wolejko ’14 and Sutton led the offense with two RBIs apiece. Boulier homered for Westminster. Jordan Gowdy ’14 and Daniels played well defensively for the Martlets.

First Girls’ Lacrosse
The Martlets had a 3-0 week with wins over Ethel Walker, Suffield and Kingswood Oxford. Brooke Heron ’12 led the team offensively with 11 goals and Gaby Christman ’11 had seven. The defense was anchored by goalies Bella Zimmer ’12 (five saves) and Molly O’Sullivan ’12 (12 saves) along with Bridget Eklund ’11, Karlyn Calamita-Crowley ’11, Nora Edmonds ’11, Marielle Lafaire ’12 and Hadley DesMeules ’12.

Second Girls’ Lacrosse
Westminster continued to show its dominance with three more wins added to the pile. Tyler O’Neil ’12 led the team in goal scoring, with 11 for the week. Lindsay Hanau ’13 also was very effective and found the goal 10 times. Many other Martlets contributed to the scoring over the course of a very productive week of play.

Third Girls’ Lacrosse
Early in the week, the Martlets earned a hard fought 7-5 win over a competitive Renbrook team. Kayla Foley ’13 and Cricket di Galoma ’13 led the team with two goals apiece. Eugenia Naamon ’14 was also spectacular in goal with 11 saves and many interceptions. Against Hotchkiss, the Martlets had to fight the weather and the Bearcats but came up with a 14-0 win. Olivia Caldwell ’14 scored her first goal of the season, and Leila Dodd ’14 had a fantastic day in goal.

First Baseball
Westminster fought for a 3-1 win over Choate this week led by the play of Matt Leach’11 and Drew Leach ’13. Matt was one-for-three, reaching on an error and scoring in the first and scoring again in the third after hitting a gap double to right center. Tucker Brumley ’11 had the RBI in the first. Jeff Smolens ’12 also drove in a run in the sixth that sent Alex Tomashoff ’13 flying around third for the run. Drew Leach was stellar on the mound, throwing six innings of no-hit baseball, giving up only two hits and a lone run in the last frame. He struck out six Choate batters along the way.

Boys’ Track
The Martlets hosted the Hilltoppers of Hopkins School this weekend at Brooks Track and defeated the visitors 99-45. Eric Wainman ’11, Emmet Shipway ’12, Matt Wilson ’11, Kevin Murray ’13, Myles Marshall ’13, and Chris Sailor ’11 all had strong days scoring at 10 points for the day. Most notably, Sailor, for the second straight week, broke the school record in the triple jump with a distance of 46 feet 4 inches. In addition to the overwhelming point-getters, the Martlets continue to set personal records.
