Weekly Sports Highlights - April 18, 2011

First Boys’ Lacrosse
The Martlets had two solid wins this week. Against Choate, Westminster pulled out a 9-7 win in overtime. Luke Laszkiewicz ’11 earned the game ball with two big goals in the win. Gordon Santry ’12 in goal, and Kevin Campbell ’11, Alec Dunn ’13, Rob Kelly ’11, Burt McGillivray ’11 and Cory Latour ’12 led the defense. Robbie Thomson ’11, Corey Taber ’11 and Will Stevens ’12 also made big plays on defense to slow the Choate comeback. The Martlets also defeated Taft 9-5 in horrible conditions. Dillon Tiner ’12 won the game ball and controlled the second half face-offs, leading Westminster, down 5-3 at the half, on a 6-0 run in the third and fourth to earn a hard-fought win. Santry (10 saves) led the poles and Laszkiewicz scored three second-half goals to bring the Martlets back for a nice Founders League road win.


Third Boys’ Lacrosse
In their first game of the season, the Martlets won a hard-fought game against a very skilled Eaglebrook squad. Westminster got off to a slow start and really struggled to pick up ground balls but finished the first half with four goals and the lead. Eaglebrook fought back in the second half, but the Martlets ultimately held on for the 5-3 win. Charlie Niles ’14 and Elliot Gifford ’11 scored two goals, and Syler Wasser ’12 also had a goal. The strong defensive effort was led by Captain Brooks King ’12, Dongho Park ’13 and Dima Kaigorodov ’12, and Austin Pope ’14 made some impressive saves in goal for the win.

First Golf
On an extremely cold, windy and rainy afternoon the First Golf team came away with victories over Berkshire and Kent in its first match of the season. The final tally was Westminster (214), Berkshire (218) and Kent (252). Jack Rubino ’13 led the Martlet effort with a 40 (+4). Other Westminster scores included Harry Richards ’11 (42), Evan Neugold ’12 (42), Max O'Connor ’11 (43), Eliza Breed ’11 (47) and Nathalie Filler ’12 (50).

Third Girls’ Lacrosse
The eager Martlets opened up the season with their first official game against Taft and came away with a big 16-5 win. The Martlets scored quickly and never looked back, leading 8-2 at the half. Captain Kayla Foley ’13 and Emily Mell ’14 led the offensive effort with five goals each, followed by Cricket di Galoma ’14 with a hat trick. Thiele Schroeder ’14, Kelsey Mackenzie ’14, and captain Laura Tingley ’13 also scored. In the back, Claire Egan ’14, Eugenia Naamon ’14 and Tingley were a stalwart defensive trio. Finally, Mari Prescod ’11 did an outstanding job in the goal with five saves.

First Boys’ Tennis
Westminster had two wins this week, 4-2 over Salisbury, indoors, and 6-1 against Pomfret. Against the Knights, the Martlets swept the first round of singles matches with Andrew Fu ’11 winning at the No. 6 position, Cam Kurtz ’12 at No.5 and Robbie Hamblett ’11 at No. 4 in three sets. Tim Welles ’11 won the clinching match at No. 3 by a 6-2, 6-4 margin.

Second Boys’ Tennis
Second Boys' Tennis was able to beat the rain against Pomfret by playing singles before doubles. Willy Green ’12 got the Martlets on the board first with his 6-1, 6-2 win at No.5. Asante Asiedu ’13 followed shortly after with a 6-3,7-5 win, having come back from 0-4 in the second set. Kevin Hope ’11 made it 3-0 with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No.3. Will Swanson ’14 clinched his match with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 4. Meanwhile both John Vantine’13 at No.1 and Andrew Bell ’14 at No. 2 won in three sets, completing a sweep of the singles. As doubles matches got started, the rain came, causing the teams to abandon the match with the score Westminster 6, Pomfret 0.

Third Tennis
The Martlets won their first match over Hall High School 5-2. In doubles, Tommy Kirsch ’11 and Elliot Nygard ’11 won at No. 3, Amory Beldock ’12 and Hayden Radovich ’11 won at No.4, Evan Yenor ’13 and Dan Roberts ’14 were spectacular at No. 5, Abby Huth ’12 and Darby Drake ’12 won their first match in two years at No. 6, Kevin Seo ’12 and Nick Aube ’14 aced their opponents at No .7, and Kaleigh Kelley ’11 and Louise Marenakos ’11 pulled out a 6-5 victory at No. 8. Radovich then partnered with Kirsch and won 6-2 at No. 9 doubles. In singles, Brian Calderon ’11 won 6-3 at No .2, Nygard cruised to a 6-4 victory at No. 3, Beau Orchard ’13 battled and won 6-4 at No. 4, and Aube finished the day by smoking his opponent 6-1 at No. 5.

First Girls’ Lacrosse
The Martlets opened up strong against Pomfret, scoring eight goals in the opening half on the way to a 14-2 victory. Westminster dominated play, grabbing 14 draw controls. Brooke Heron ’12 led the attack with five goals and two assists. Claire Hodson ’11 debuted for the first time this season after recovering from an ankle injury and put three goals away in the victory. Taylor Virtue ’11 finished with two goals while Gaby Christman ’11, Whit Powel ’11, Alana Carpenter ’12, and Leigh Anne Baldwin ’11 scored one goal apiece. Bridget Eklund ’11 and Eleni Tebano ’13 paced the defensive effort and also picked up three ground balls each.

Second Girls’ Lacrosse
Second Girls’ Lacrosse had another great game against Pomfret. After a long bus ride and short warm-up, the team had an interesting start to the first half, but the girls pulled it together and came out with a strong win, 15-3. Goals were scored by Tyler O'Neil ’12 (4), Megan Walsh ’14 (4), Katie Hovey ’14 (1), Alex Regan ’13 (3), Sydney Rivers ’13 (1), Eliza Worcester ’13 (1), and Emma Conlon ’13 (1). Ellie Deveaux ’14 and Walsh played great games in the midfield, earning lots of ground balls and assisting with great transitions from defense to offense.

First Girls’ Tennis
The Martlets were able to put away the squad from Millbrook 7-0 before nasty weather arrived. Margaret Berry ’11 at No. 1 singles and Skyy McGeachy-Campbell ’13 at No.2 singles were steady right from the first game, winning easily. At No. 3, Kathleen Gudas ’12 worked out some serving issues after a close first set and won the second handily. At No. 4 singles, Hannah Leathers ’11 won in straights sets as well. At No.1 doubles, Carolyn Zimmer ’11 and Katherine Kelter ’14 again showed some decent movement at the net and won in straight sets, as did Steph Werner ’11 and Nina Grey ’11 at the No. 2 doubles position. At No. 3, Chessy di Galoma ’11 and Libby Kelter ’12 stopped after the first set, which they won, because of the rain.

First Softball
Westminster had three wins during the week, including a 12-1 victory over Ethel Walker and a 7-1 decision against Kingswood-Oxford. In their third match-up of the week, Brooke Wolejko ’14 had a grand slam and a two-run homer, and Hayley Ahouse ’13 pitched a strong game to lead Westminster over Kent on Saturday. Wolejko had eight runs batted in and Ahouse allowed only four Kent base hits. Rachel Monroe ’14, Brittany Sutton ’11 and Michela Gozzi ’13 had three hits apiece for the Martlets. Sutton had two triples and six RBIs, and Kat Pate ’14 also tripled and drove in three runs.

Boys’ Track and Field
In their first outing of the season, Boys’ Track and Field garnered a win over Trinity-Pawling in wet and wild conditions at Choate. Westminster brought home 12 of 17 firsts, with Matt Wilson ’11 doing well in the weights and Captain Chris Sailor ’11 soaring to win both the long jump and triple jump. Myles Marshall was unstoppable in the high jump and 400 meter race, and Brendan Sullivan ’11, Eric Wainman ’11 and Emmet Shipway ’12 also grabbed first-place honors.
