Two Championships Celebrated

Both the First Girls’ Hockey team and First Boys’ Hockey team concluded their seasons by winning tournaments.

The girls’ team (25-1) retained their crown as Division I New England Champions by beating Nobles in the final, 3-1. After decisive victories over Loomis (5-2) and Lawrence Academy (4-0), the Martlets faced an evenly matched Nobles team, which Westminster had not faced earlier in the season. Sydney Daniels ’13 scored the first two goals for the Black and Gold, and Amanda Boulier ’11 closed the door on Nobles with the final tally of the game. Goalie Carmen MacDonald ’11 was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament.

The boys’ team participated in the Earl/Martin Large School Tournament, named in part after former longtime Westminster hockey coach Tom Earl. After avenging an earlier loss to Brunswick 5-3 in the quarters, Westminster defeated Belmont Hill, 3-1, in the semifinals. The finals pitted the Martlets against Governor’s Academy, and quickly the Black and Gold took control of the game. Jumping out to an early lead, Westminster never looked back and won the championship by a 5-2 margin. Over the course of the season, Westminster compiled an impressive 22-6-2 record in a very competitive league.

It has been a great year for Westminster hockey highlighted by two holiday tournament victories, the outdoor games at Rentschler Field, and now two championships to cap off extraordinary seasons.
