Speaker Discusses Helping Others to Break Gang Connections

Deacon Arthur Miller, director of Black Ministries for the Archdiocese of Hartford and a civil rights worker in the 60s, gave a chapel talk at Westminster Feb. 22 about gangs.

“People are measured from the depths from which they come and also measured on their willingness to help those who are oppressed,” said Deacon Miller.

He introduced Herman Cintron, a former leader in the Los Solidos gang, and David Blanks, two friends Deacon Miller calls “sons” who have “overcome extraordinary things” to turn away from gangs. They shared stories of losing friends and family members to gang violence and their life in gangs. Both are now certified trainers in Kingian Nonviolence.

“All of you can do something great,” said Deacon Miller in closing his remarks. “Your greatness depends on what you do for your fellow human beings. We are calling each one of you to greatness. Do something grand with it. Be the greatness you are called to be.”
