Weekly Sports Highlights - January 31, 2011

First Girls’ Hockey

This week, the Martlets added two victories to their record, which now stands at an impressive 14-1. First, Westminster defeated Williston-Northampton in a 4-3 overtime battle. Sydney Daniels ’13 earned a hat trick in the win, including the winning goal in extra time. Amanda Boulier ’11 and Karlyn Calamita-Crowley ’11 were strong on defense all game, and Carmen MacDonald ’11 had a number of big saves in goal. On Saturday, the Martlets had an easier time with Gunnery, ultimately winning 7-1 with a number of players contributing to the victory. Rachel Kennedy ’12 and Boulier each had two goals apiece, and Rachel Farrel ’11 had a goal and two assists.

 

Second Girls’ Hockey

The Black and Gold remained unbeaten with two impressive wins this week. Tyler O’Neil ’12 and Ellie Deveaux ’14 scored the goals in a 2-1 win over a tough Canterbury squad. In another close game with Berkshire, the Martlets ultimately were able to pull away with the 5-1 win. In addition to O’Neil and Deveaux scoring again, Margaret Berry ’11, Andrea Cross ’11 and Katie Hovey ’14 also added to the Westminster tally.

 

Second Boys’ Hockey

The Martlets blanked Williston with a resounding 6-0 victory. Goal scorers included Tristan Rai '14, Tommy Hovey '11, Robbie Hamblett '11, Xavier Morin '13, Carter Walsh '11 and Brad Taber '11. Walsh also had three assists; Morin had two; and Rai, Hamblett and Will Stevens '12 earned one assist each. Elliot Nygard '11 and Grant Kugler '11 shared the game between the pipes to secure the shutout.

 

Boys’ Swimming and Diving

Westminster collected two wins in the pool this week. Against Williston, the boys scored a 102.5-82.5 victory, and the Martlets were even more dominant over Canterbury with a 95-58 win and taking first in every event. Collecting blue ribbons for the Martlets during the course of the week were Jake Cahill '12, Eric Wainman '11, Charlie Januzsewski '13, Drew Poling '13,Conor Mullen '12, Josh Kokulis '12, and Cullen Matt '13.

 

Girls’ Swimming and Diving

The Martlets earned a convincing victory against Canterbury, 95-82. Co-captain Emily Schwartz '11 grabbed two individual wins in the 200 Freestyle and the 100 Backstroke; Emily Kunsman '14 won the 200 IM and the 100 Freestyle; Emily Teschner '12 took the top spot in the 50 Free, and Sarah Holmes '13 raced to first in the 500 Freestyle with her best time. Schwartz, Teschner, Holmes and Kunsman also placed first in the 400 Freestyle Relay. Kayla Foley '13 won the diving event, with Caroline Brady '12 and Sarah Dimmitt '12 in second and third, respectively.

 

First Boys’ Squash

Despite a tight 3-4 loss to Belmont Hill, the Martlets put away Deerfield 7-0 and Andover 6-1 this week. Michael LeBlanc ’12 and Jacob Lee ’11 each were impressive in their 3-0 wins over Andover, and Ahmed Abdel Khalek ’12 and Harry Ganek ’14 were dominant against Belmont Hill, winning in straight games at the #1 and #7 spots, respectively.

 

Second Boys’ Squash

Second Boys’ Squash added another notch to its belt with a deceptively close 7-0 win over Deerfield. Two of the matches went to five games, and three were decided in four games, but in the end, the Black and Gold prevailed. Kevin Hope '11, Gavin McGovern '11, Drew Leach '13, Andrew Fu '11, Beau Orchard '13, Ben Shively '14 and Nick Mahany '11 all were part of the victory for the Martlets.

 

Third Boys’ Squash

In their lone match of the week, the Martlets earned a tough 4-3 win over Taft. Tied at three, with 3-0 victories for Westminster by Peter Tang ’12 at #4, Miguel Castello ’13 at #3, and Will O’Donnell ’13 at #1, the match came down to the #2 pairing. Willy Green ’12 and his worthy opponent split the first four games and were tied at nine all in the fifth and decisive game. The players battled to nine all, at which point, Green won the next two points and the match.

 

First Girls’ Squash

First Girls’ Squash improved its record to 6-2 with a 5-2 win over Westover. The Martlets swept the even matches to take a 3-0 lead after the first round. Winners included Cricket di Galoma '14 at #6, Chessy di Galoma '11 at #4 , and in the match of the day, Christi DeSimone '12 at #2, defeating a tough opponent on the strength of good defense and better decision-making. Hannah Leathers '11 ended up nailing down the team victory when she prevailed in three straight at #5. Katie Polio ’11 pulled out a five-game win at #6.
