Weekly Sports Highlights - January 24

First Boys’ Hockey

After a dominant 9-0 win over Canterbury earlier in the week, the Martlets found themselves in a hotly contested evening bout with Loomis on Saturday. Boasting one of the best goalies in New England, the Pelicans made it difficult to score despite a huge Martlet advantage in shots on goal. Westminster outshot Loomis 16-0 in the first, but only managed one when Emilio Audi ’12 converted on a pass from defenseman Stu MacKenzie ’11. After giving up two goals in the second, Westminster was down 2-1 going into the third despite a 42 -10 advantage in shots at that point. Throughout the third period, Westminster continued to press and, finally, Chris Izmirlian ’12 took the puck in on a break away and made an exceptional move to beat Loomis' goalie. The remainder of the third period was scoreless, and the teams went into the overtime frame, and only two shifts in, Evan Neugold ’12 let fly a rocket from the point that found its way through traffic and gave Westminster the sudden-death victory.

Second Boys’ Hockey

In their only game of the week, the Martlets hosted Loomis and skated away with a 6-1 win. Goal scorers included Dan Roberts ’14, Tristan Rai ’14, Brad Taber ’11, Robbie Hamblett ’11, and Tommy Hovey ’11. Assists on the day went to John Pappas ’14, Emmett Shipway ’12, Tim Welles ’11, Will Stevens ’12, Carter Walsh ’11, Xavier Morin ’13, Taber and Hamblett. Elliot Nygard ’11 and Grant Kugler ’11 shared the goaltending duties and almost escaped with the shut-out, but for a late third period Loomis tally.

Boys’ Swimming and Diving

The Martlets led Wilbraham-Monson from start to finish in their meet of the week. Winning nine of the eleven races of the day, the boys had an impressive number of season-best times and gritty swims. Conor Mullen ’12 was a double winner (200 IM, 100 Backstroke), while Drew Poling ’13 and Augie Morris ’13 took first and second, respectively, in the 50 Freestyle. Co-captain Eric Wainman ’11 won the 100 Breaststroke with his best time, Jake Cahill ’12 took the top spot in the 500 Freestyle, and John FitzPatrick won the 100 Fly.

First Boys’ Squash

The Martlets swept two teams this week, Pomfret and Trinity-Pawling. Against Pomfret, all Westminster players won in three games except for John Eder ’11 who needed an extra frame to get the win after losing his first game 10-12. Matt Leach ’11 stood out for his particularly impressive play of the day. With their win against T-P, Westminster moved 4-0 in the Founders League. No player dropped a game. Harry Ganek ’14 was especially strong with an 11-2,11-3,11-3 win at #7.

At #1, Will O’Donnell ’13 won yet another close match in his usual steady and unflappable manner. In their contest with Millbrook, Chris Ippolito ’11, at #7, played his best match of the season, winning in straight games. O’Donell, at #1, Castello, at #2, and Will Swanson ’14, at #4, won in four games. Miller, at #3, played his usual smart and savvy brand of squash in shutting out his opponent 3-0.

First Girls’ Hockey

After a commanding win over Millbrook (4-0), the Martlets faced a determined and physical Hotchkiss squad at home. It took a true team effort to pull out the close 2-0 win. Sydney Daniels ’13 scored the only goal of the first two periods off of an assist from Amanda Boulier ’11. Despite an edge in shots, Westminster could not get another goal until late into the third period when the Bearcats pulled their goalie. Hotchkiss had opportunities to even the game throughout the third period, but the Martlets, led by goalie Carmen MacDonald ’11, were able to hold off the Bearcat assault and secure the win.

Second Girls’ Hockey

The Martlets notched two more wins this week with significant margins of victory over Taft and Hotchkiss. Leading the impressive offensive effort with three goals on the week were Ellie Deveaux ’14 and Katie Hovey ’14. Adding two goals and an assist was Andrea Cross ’11.
