Weekly Highlights - January 17

First Girls’ Hockey
The Martlets won two games in dominant fashion this week. Against perennial rival Choate, Westminster was able to come away with a big 4-0 win on the road, and then on Saturday, the Black and Gold defeated Northfield-Mount Hermon by the same tally. Alli Devins ’13 led the way with a total of three goals during the two contests. Rachel Kennedy ’12 also had a goal in each game, and Sydney Daniels ’13 had a goal and an assist. Carmen MacDonald ’11 earned the two shutouts between the pipes.

Second Girls’ Hockey
The Martlets continued their unbeaten streak as they dispatched of Williston Northampton with a decisive 5-1 win. Goal scorers included Katie Hovey ’14. Tyler O’Neil ’12, Michela Gozzi ’13, Ally Dunne ’13 and Ellie Deveaux ’14. At goalie, Jen Girard ’14 did a nice job of turning away a number of shots and earned the game puck for the Martlets for a strong defensive performance.

First Girls’ Squash
Westminster earned two wins in a row this week, defeating Suffield 5-2 and Miss Porter’s 7-0. Going 2-0 on the week for the Martlets were Olivia Frank ’11, Hannah Leathers ’11, Cricket di Galoma ’14, Katie Polio ’11 and Mallory Mason ’11.

Girls’ Swimming and Diving
Earning their first victory of the season, the Martlets rallied behind incredible performances by co-captain Emily Schwartz ’11, Sarah Holmes ’13 and Emily Kunsman ’14, to win 11 of the 12 events and beat Kent 97-86 at home. Schwartz won the 200 Freestyle and the 100 Backstroke, while Holmes took the 100 Fly and 500 Freestyle. Kunsman was victorious in the 200 IM and the 100, and Emily Teschner ’12 added a first place in the 50 with her best time. Schwartz, Kunsman, Holmes and Teschner teamed up to win the 200 Medley and 400 Freestyle relays. Sarah Dimmitt ’12 took charge in the diving event and led Kayla Foley '13 and Caroline Brady ’12 to a 1-2-3 finish.

First Boys’ Squash
In the last week, the Martlets faced two opponents, Kingswood Oxford and Kent, and defeated both by a score of 7-0. Against Kent, Harry Ganek ’14 and Beau Orchard ’13 were strong at number 6 and number 7, allowing only 16 points between them. Gavin McGovern ’11, Hayden Radovich ’11, and Matt Leach ’11 were even more stingy, allowing only 14 points in total. Ahmed Abdel Khalek ’12 faced a very talented player at number 1 but still came away with a 3-0 victory.

Second Boys’ Squash
Even with three players joining the team from the thirds team, Second Boys' Squash easily handled Kent in a 7-0 victory to move to 4-0 on the season. Ben Shively ’14, Charlie Geitz ’11, Chris Conzelmann ’13, Miguel Castello ’13, Andrew Fu ’11, Drew Leach ’13 and Willy Green ’12 all won without dropping a game.

Second Boys’ Basketball
In their only game of the week, Second Boys’ Basketball overcame Canterbury 47-22. Dima Kaigorodov ’12 hit two 3-pointers, on his way to a game high 10 points, early in the game to set the tone as Westminster raced out to a 27-3 half-time lead. The host Saints had a lot of good looks at the hoop, but fortunately for the Martlets, they stayed cold from the floor. Led by six steals from Max Langlois ’13 and seven rebounds by Will Lammey ’13, Westminster amped up the defense in the second half to prevent a Saints’ run.

First Boys’ Hockey
For the first time in a number of years, Westminster beat Taft at Taft, and they did so in strong fashion, shutting out the Rhinos and essentially controlling the play from start to finish. The Martlets scored 15 minutes into the first period when Jake Crow ’12 slid a pass to David Hallisey ’13 who roofed a shot that was unseen by the Taft goalie. Hallisey would go hard to the net himself five minutes into the second and was able to whack home the rebound of a Tim Acker ’11 shot for his second of the game. Nick Finn ’12 put the Martlets up by three only a minute into the third period. While Westminster certainly had the advantage in possession time, Taft had their share of opportunities, but Patrick Spano ’12 made a number of strong saves to earn his second shutout of the year.
