Weekly Highlights – January 10

First Boys’ Squash
The Martlets started the new year with a convincing win over Suffield. Westminster took every match in straight games. Michael LeBlanc ’12 and Ahmed Abdel Khalek ’12 led the team with exceptional and noteworthy play in their victories.

Second Boys’ Squash
The Second Boys' Squash team remained undefeated with a 7-0 victory over Suffield Academy. All Martlets won without dropping a game. The top seven victors for Westminster were Kevin Hope ’11, Beau Orchard ’13, Gavin McGovern ’11, Nick Mahany ’11, Ben Shively ’14, Andrew Fu ’11 and Charlie Geitz ’11.

First Girls’ Hockey
After a very disappointing loss to Greenwich on Wednesday, the Martlets put together a strong showing against Taft. In the first period, the speed at which the Martlets came at Taft was impressive. Westminster out shot Taft 9 to 3 in the period and, after a flurry of activity, finally broke through and Rachel Farrel ’11 scored the go-ahead and eventual game-winning goal. Westminster would retain their intensity and dominance in shots for the remainder of the game, despite not tallying another goal.

Second Girls’ Hockey
In their first game of 2011, Westminster defeated the Simsbury High School JV team 6-3. The Martlet offense jumped out to a 6-0 lead during the first two periods. Ellie Deveaux ’14 netted the first goal, followed by a pair from Michela Gozzi ’13. Gozzi scored her third of the afternoon in the second period for the hat trick, and Emily Mell ’14 and Tyler O’Neil ’12 both had a goal a piece to bring the tally to six. The Simsbury High School girls made a late run in the third period and added a few scores of their own. Jen Girard ’14 remained steady in the net with great saves and the Westminster defensive squad played tough defense for the duration of the game.

Third Girls’ Squash
The Martlets earned their first win of the season with a 6-1 victory over Canterbury.

Second Girls’ Basketball
The Martlets earned their first win with a great team effort versus Ethel Walker. Westminster came away with a dominant 46-20 victory.

First Boys’ Basketball
For the second time this season, the Martlets were able to earn a win against Pomfret. After a close first half, the second was a different story. With nice passing and the powerful inside presence of Matt Wilson ’11, the Martlets took control of the game and never looked back. Westminster won the game 63–41. Team leaders were Wilson with 31 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks; and Mike Hom '11 who had six assists.

Second Boys’ Basketball
Westminster improved to 3-2 on the young season with a strong team defensive effort in the second half. After a 23-21 halftime lead, the Martlets dug in with full-court pressure to hold the Griffins in check offensively for the next 16 minutes. Mike McNally ’14 had 15 points to lead all scorers while Tommy Kirsch ’11 added 10 points and four steals. Dillon Gomes ’12 and Marquez Cummings ’12 each had four assists while Ryan Cholnoky ’12 grabbed five offensive rebounds.

First Boys’ Hockey
Westminster grabbed their first win of the new year with a strong effort over a visiting Trinity Pawling squad. The teams played fairly evenly throughout the first, with the Martlets picking up the lone tally off the stick of Tim Acker ’11. However, the second period was a completely different story as Westminster exploded for five goals, each coming from a different scorer. With a 6-1 lead going into the third period, Westminster finished strong, adding three more goals as Captain Corey Taber ’11 notched his second of the game, and Luke Laskiewicz ’11 nabbed two to complete his second hat trick of the season.

Second Boys’ Hockey
In their first game after the break against Cathedral High School, the Martlets got off to a slow start. After getting down 0-1, Westminster responded with two goals of their own from Hayden Johnstone ’13 and Brad Taber ’11 before the end of the first. Cathedral tied the game to start the second but Robbie Hamblettt ’11 put the hosts ahead for good after receiving the puck from line mates Tommy Hovey ’11 and Carter Walsh ’11. Will Stevens ’12 scored the final goal of the game, which resulted in a 4-2 Martlet victory.

Third Boys’ Hockey
Westminster improved to 1-3 on the season with a 3-1 victory over Trinity-Pawling. After T-P started the scoring, Westminster, determined to not let this one slip away, answered the call 45 seconds later as Will Sprenker ’13 tipped home a shot from Luke Cordasco ’13. Westminster built off of the momentum provided by Sprenker's goal and opened the third period with a flurry of offense. Sprenker added his second of the game as he buried a Tommy Griffith ’14 rebound in an open net. Three minutes later, Owen McDonough ’13 labeled a shot to the upper ninety of the left corner to seal the win. Playing particularly well in the win were Ben Baucherio ’14 (who turned aside a number of quality offensive attempts by T-P), Sprenker, Riley Bitterli ’14 and Owen McDonough ’13.
