The Farmington Valley YMCA awarded Westminster School its 2010 Red Triangle Award at its annual meeting and volunteer appreciation dinner Nov. 18 at the Tower Ridge Country Club in Simsbury. The award is given to organizations that have made a difference in the work of the YMCA.
“This year we have chosen Westminster School for the great things you have done with your all-school volunteer day,” said Brian K. Bergeson, district executive director of the Farmington Valley YMCA.
Westminster students and faculty have volunteered at Camp Chase, a YMCA camp located on 88 acres in Burlington, Conn., the last two years as a part of the school’s Community Service Day. Camp Chase is both a summer Day Camp for children ages 5-16 and a popular family swim center.
This year, 71 Third Formers and nine faculty members cleared brush from paths in the woods, hauled gravel up a hill to replace eroded earth from steps in the amphitheater, built fire pits, took down volleyball nets and helped make game tables.
Faculty member Gloria Connell, who serves as Westminster’s Director of Community Service, and Ronald Yeung ’13 represented Westminster at the dinner and awards ceremony.
“Westminster’s core values of community, character, balance and involvement intersect perfectly with the YMCA’s core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility,” said Gloria. “We thank the entire YMCA family for this wonderful recognition of our service to others.”
