Tony Griffith, head of the Westminster Mathematics Department, will be giving a presentation at the fall meeting of the Northeastern Section of The Mathematical Association of America (MAA) to be held at Providence College Nov. 19 and 20. He will be a part of a panel discussion titled “What Do Pre-college Students Need to Succeed in College Mathematics Courses and How do the Various Pre-college Initiatives Address This Need?”
“Speaking with and learning from the university professors at this MAA conference will help Westminster better prepare its students for success in college mathematics,” said Tony. Other panelists include Lewis Pakula, from the University of Rhode Island; Mary Sullivan from Rhode Island College; and Lynn Rakatansky, president of The Association of Teachers of Mathematics in New England.
Tony often speaks at both regional and national mathematics conferences. In April, he spoke at the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics conference in San Diego on NBA Draft Lottery Probabilities. He has also spoken on apportionment in the U.S. House of Representatives and on false positives and false negatives in drug and disease testing.
At Westminster, Tony holds the Walter Edge Jr. Master Teaching Chair and teaches Advanced Placement Calculus BC and other mathematics courses. He recently completed his sixth year as an AP Calculus reader.
