For the first time in school history, the Martlets are Division I New England Champions in girls' hockey. The girls’ hockey team secured the #4 seed in the Division I New England Tournament with 17-3-2 regular season record, led by Sixth Form captains Sara Ugalde of Burlington, Conn., and Paige Decker of New Preston, Conn. The team's coaches are David Pope and Jessica Keeley.
In the quarterfinals, Westminster hosted #5 seed Williston. While the game was competitive, the Martlets were dominant and shutout the Wildcats 3-0.
The final four took place at Berkshire School over the weekend with Westminster against #1 seed Choate and #3 Nobles taking on #7 Lawrence Academy. Choate defeated Westminster in a close game during the regular season, and the semi-final matchup proved to be another intense battle.
The Martlets scored first on a power play in the first period. The Wild Boars stormed back early in the second to even the score. The third period was all Black and Gold. The Martlets earned the go-ahead tally and were able to hold Choate scoreless. It was a big upset that sent the Martlets into the finals for the first time in school history.
Lawrence Academy also ousted a tournament favorite and faced the Martlets in the finals. Lawrence got on the board first with a goal in the first period. But the unfazed Martlets responded minutes later with a goal of their own. The first period saw chances by both squads to break the tie, but the teams went into the first break knotted at one apiece. The second period was pretty much all Black and Gold as the Martlets not only took the lead but extended it to two. In the final frame, it was clear that Lawrence was fighting fatigue and the Martlets had a number of chances to ice the game. While another goal never developed, Westminster didn't need it and the game came to end with the Martlets in control. Paige Decker '10 received the tournament MVP award, notching a goal and an assist on the day.
With a number of key young players on the team Westminster will clearly be a force to be reckoned with in girls’ hockey for seasons to come.
