An Exciting, Memorable Tournament for Field Hockey

Hotchkiss dominated play in the first half with strong midfield play that made it difficult for Westminster to advance the ball to their offensive end.  The Martlets ended up with few opportunities and ultimately seemed fortunate to be down only 0-1 at the half.  This was in part due to the great efforts by goalkeeper Carmen MacDonald '11 who had 13 saves on the day.

After the intermission, Hotchkiss again seemed in control and scored another goal to go up 2-0.  The Black and Gold did not hang their heads, however, but rather redoubled their efforts and the momentum began to shift as the Martlets pressured the Hotchkiss defense consistently.  A few minutes later Paige Decker '10 scored off of a an assist from Mallory Mason '11 on a corner.  The Black and Gold were fired up and continued to push the ball up the field, but with minutes quickly ticking away, the game almost seemed surely decided in Hotchkiss' favor.

With less than one minute remaining in regulation, the Martlets moved the ball up the field, earned a corner and scored with no time left on the clock.  Again it was the duo of Decker and Mason though this time Mason found the goal.  For the second playoff game in a row, the Martlets found themselves going into overtime, to play 7 v. 7.

This time, however, the game was decided in the first overtime period when after a few minutes in, Hotchkiss was able to get the ball past MacDonald and earn the "Sudden Victory."  While it was a disappointing end for the Black and Gold, the team should be proud of their nonstop effort and relentless attitude.

To advance to the final, Westminster defeated #3 Greenwich Academy and Hotchkiss defeated #1 seed Andover.

It has been another historical season for the program, one that the entire Westminster community can be proud of.  It is also sad to say goodbye to the Sixth Formers who have provided great leadership all season long.  Decker finished the season with 9 goals and 8 assists. Sara Nolan played stellar defense all season and made the final penalty stroke for Westminster in the semi-final game. Maddie King played on the team for four years and contributed speedy skills on the forward line. Margaret Miller was strong on the left side of the field and her team spirit was extraordinary. Sara Ugalde played a critical role on defense this year, allowing only 12 goals for the season. Finally, Margaret Wyatt, although she was sidelined this season due to a back injury, contributed in numerous ways with her spirit and leadership.  This was a truly special group, one that can be proud of their accomplishments and hold their heads up high.
