Student Recognized for Contributions to Race Relations

Westminster student Tiffany Liu ‘10 has been awarded a Certificate of Accomplishment in this year’s Princeton Prize in Race Relations for Connecticut, which recognizes high school students for their efforts to increase understanding and cooperation among people of different racial backgrounds. She was among six students recognized at an awards ceremony April 21 at the Graduate Club on the Yale University campus.

Tiffany was selected for the award for “promoting racial awareness and diversity at Westminster School” through her work as editor of the Multicultural Student Union’s newspaper and her involvement in Martin Luther King Jr. Day activities and annual Chinese New Year’s Day celebrations. This year, she produced a moving 10-minute video documenting progress in the United States toward achieving racial equality.

Melinda Wright, Westminster’s Director of Multicultural Affairs and Associate Director of Admissions, brought the award to Tiffany’s attention, encouraged her to apply and wrote a letter of recommendation that highlighted Tiffany’s work on the video and the newsletter.

“Getting the award wasn't the biggest part of my experience,” said Tiffany. “It was working with other people who are as passionate as I am in promoting culture that really kept me motivated to work even harder.”

More than 80 people attended the awards dinner, including State Senator Toni Harp and State Representative Lonnie Reed, who both spoke passionately about the important work to which the six students have committed themselves.

“Tiffany has made us all very proud of Westminster,” commented Sara Deveaux, who serves as Tiffany’s faculty advisor and accompanied her to the dinner.

Sponsored by Princeton University, The Princeton Prize in Race Relations was created in 2003 to recognize high school students for outstanding work in their schools or communities to advance the cause of race relations. Students in 23 cities around the United States are eligible for the prizes. In the five years since the prize’s inception, more than 250 students have been honored for conducting volunteer projects that promote positive race relations.

Among the six students recognized in Connecticut this year, Tiffany was the only junior. All of the others were seniors.
