Westminster Student Wins Constitutional Essay Contest

For the first time in recent years, a Westminster student can boast winning the WALKS Foundation’s Constitutional Essay Contest. Annually five local schools, Westminster, Avon, Loomis, Kingswood-Oxford, and Suffield, nominate two finalists from their Fifth Form to compete in the contest. This year, students were asked to analyze the role of the vice presidency and how it has changed over time. Ten Westminster students tackled the question over the winter term, completing essays that were well written and thoroughly researched. The papers of Adam Susaneck ’10 and Kathryn Brady ’10 were then selected by the History Department to move forward to the final round of the competition.

Hugh Macgill, former dean of the University of Connecticut Law School, judged the finalists anonymously, and the winner was announced recently at the annual WALKS dinner. The Westminster contingent was overjoyed when Adam was named the winner. In addition to receiving a certificate of honor and a cash prize, his name will be engraved on a ceremonial silver plate that remains with the winning school until the following year’s competition.

“Adam’s paper was extraordinary,” said History Department Head Betsy Tanzosh. “It was thoroughly researched and the analysis was impressive. Adam also took a somewhat unconventional approach and surely his paper stood out. He is a beautiful writer, and he has real talent. We are quite proud of his accomplishment.”
