Spanish Teacher Publishes “Monster” Story

Westminster Spanish teacher Kat Mendez published a story in the December issue of Pais Cultural, a literary magazine based in the Dominican Republic, about the capacity humans have for both good and evil and how they can become “monsters.”  Titled “La Canción del Monstruo del Doctor Frankenstein” (“The Song of Doctor Frankenstein's Monster”), it is about the monster from the novel “Frankenstein,” written in his voice.

“The monster tries to remember who he is and how he became a monster,” explained Kat.  “Who or what is at fault for his evil side? I've always loved the story of Frankenstein and always felt somewhat sad for the monster.”

Her story started out as a poem and then became more of a piece of prose. It is written in Spanish, and she is not sure she will write a translation.

Kat is a big fan of the macabre and the dark side of poetry. “I've always appreciated the poetry of Edgar Allen Poe and Federico García Lorca,” she said. She hopes to continue to write poetry in both English and Spanish in the future.
