Field Hockey Defeats Andover in the First Round of Tournament Play

With the support of many parents, two van loads of excited students and some loyal faculty, Westminster felt at home despite the drive to Andover. From the start, Westminster dominated play and then maintained control throughout the game throughout both halves. Each team had 7 penalty corners awarded, but a stellar job on defense by Carmen Macdonald '11 in goal and the defensive trio of Ali Bragg '09, Alie Philip '09, and Sara Nolan '10 kept Andover scoreless.

Emily Walsh '09 controlled play in the midfield, making strong transitions and distributing the ball to the forwards. Caroline Scott '09 played tough defense outside of Westminster's offensive circle to win back possession from Andover's free hits and continue Westminster's momentum. Despite a scoreless first half, the Martlets had several scoring opportunities but were unable to finish.

Entering the second half, the Martlets proved to be ready to put the ball away and close out Andover's opportunities. Paige Decker '10 scored less than 5 minutes into the second half, and struck again 40 seconds later to earn the 2-0 lead and close out the scoring for the game. Decker's first goal came off of an assist from Walsh and her second goal a tip into goal after a hard shot at goal.

Rachel Farrel '11 played with intensity and heart, stepping up to balls to force turnovers and spark fast break situations. Caroline Moran'09 also paced the Martlets of the forward line with aggressive defense and good ball movement in the offensive circle. Maddie King '10 and Mallory Mason '11 held strong in the midfield and forward line, pushing Andover's defenders, breaking up their passes and momentum, and supporting offensive opportunities.

The number five ranked Martlets walked off the field proud to upset the fourth seed, on the road, and now look ahead to a match-up against number one seed Hotchkiss at Greenwich Academy at 2 pm on Saturday.
