Hundreds of Martlets Turn Out for Reunion 2008

Martlets from as far away as Hawaii returned to the Hill May 9-11 for Reunion 2008. The weekend began with Friday night dinners for the fifth through the 45th reunion classes at popular restaurants in Simsbury, while the 50th reunion class dined in Hinman Reading Room and the 60th reunion class at the home of Johns Winship ’48.

At their 50th reunion dinner, the Class of 1958 celebrated with numerous toasts and remembrances of classmates, including the late Henry Orr, for whom the class raised $150,000 to name a classroom in his honor in the new academic center. “He loved Westminster and came back for every reunion,” said Herrick Jackson ’58. “It was obvious and natural to dedicate a classroom in his honor.” Henry’s widow Nanette, their son, Henry, and daughter, Nan, and her husband, Dalton, also attended the dinner.

Saturday’s activities kicked off with a coffee in the Headmaster’s study, followed by a poetry reading featuring English Department Head Michael Cervas in Hinman Reading Room. Michael talked about the highly successful Westminster Poetry Series and read poems from his recently published book, “Inside the Box.”

At the “Meet the Martlets” panel discussion, which featured faculty members Peter Newman ’80, Kathleen Devaney and Dana Chapin and Sixth Formers Emily Cranshaw, Tommy Cross, Michele Ribaudo and Amy Lee, alumni had a chance to learn more about current life on campus. They asked questions about the college search process, things to do in Simsbury, community service opportunities, the dress code and the chapel program. (Continued)
