Squash Players Earn Trophies at Championships

First Boys’ Squash competed in the Class B New England Interscholastic Squash Association Championships at Deerfield Academy Feb. 23-24 along with 20 other schools. Westminster won 21 of the 34 matches it played, finishing seventh with 91 points behind St. Luke's, Suffield, Middlesex, Taft, Rye Country Day and Canterbury, in that order.

Three Westminster players received trophies for their efforts.

Cris Gomez  ’10 finished 4-1 in fifth place, losing only to the finalist in the first round. Cris won the consolation draw with four straight wins including a very exciting come-from-behind 10-8 victory in the fifth game, after being down 8-3 and facing three match points.

Roger Peikin ’09 played his best squash of the season, finishing 3-2 in fourth place. He didn't lose a game into the semi-finals and beat a player from Trinity-Pawling who had beaten him in five games earlier in the season.

Luke Stevens ’10 was in the zone and finished 3-1 in second place, losing only in the finals. Luke played his best squash of the season.

“The best thing about the championships was that every person on the team played his best squash,” said head coach Peter Doucette.
