Helping Others Through Community Service

A number of Westminster students participated in community service during the fall trimester by helping care for children in the afternoon program at the University of Hartford Magnet School in West Hartford. Westminster students visited the school for two hours each afternoon and helped the children with homework, reading and play activities.

The following are some comments about the experience from Westminster students who participated in the program:

•    “After a few weeks, the kids really started to open up to us about their home lives and families. Sometimes it was hard to respond to the information they gave us. … But I guess that’s one of the best things about my experience in community service: it really gave me a greater perspective on my life and made me appreciate the privileges I have.”

•    “Westminster School provides a rewarding program within community service, and the bonds made throughout our time with the kids will stick forever.”

•    “One student in particular has rewarded my efforts. He has trouble reading, despite his being in fourth grade. Although he seems to have trouble concentrating, and also needs help with many simple words, I made sure to help him. A very rewarding experience occurred just a few weeks ago. While listening to him read, it dawned on me that he had significantly improved his reading skills. … Realizing that I had made a difference, helping him to learn a skill that he can us for the rest of his life, put a smile on my face, and showed why community service is so enjoyable to me.”
