First Girls' Soccer Upsets Brooks, Will Play Andover Sat. in Semifinals
Brooks asserted itself early in the first half sending
long balls to their very fast strikers and from very dangerous corners.
The Martlet defense held, however, and the offense started to make
equally dangerous plays.
At the 19:05 mark Liz Cole '09 sent a direct into Brooks' box. Amanda Boulier '11 kept the ball from going over the endline and pushed it across the front of the goal where halfback Laura Gineo '10 directed the ball into an open net. The teams broke for intermission with the score 1 - 0 in favor of the visitors.
Brooks came out very strong in the second half, but the Martlets began counterattacking a pressing Brooks defense. With less than two minutes left in the contest, Goalie Bethany Dymarczyk '08 made two spectacular saves, going over the back of a Brooks striker to punch the ball downfield from a dangerous corner and then finally pouncing on the ball during a wild scramble in front of the Westminster net. The 3-year All-Star goalie played one of her finest games of her Westminster career.
The defensive line of Elena Ridenour '09, Liz Cole '09, Corinne Werner '10, and Sara Reid as well as Torrey Leroy '09 played outstanding defensive games against a fast and highly talented Brooks offense.
