Boston Bruins Select Tommy Cross ’08

Tommy Cross ’08 was drafted by the Boston Bruins in the second round of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft (35th overall draft pick) in Columbus, Ohio, June 23. The Bruins traded the 38th and the 69th picks to the Chicago Blackhawks to move up to the 35th selection and acquire Tommy.

The six-foot-three-inch, 195-pound defenseman recently completed his first season with Westminster, where he posted 20 points (eight goals and 12 assists) in 25 games. He will play for the Martlets again next season and has committed to Boston College in the fall of 2008 before turning professional.

“The draft was simply validation for all of Tommy’s hard work and commitment,” said Tim Joncas ’00, head coach of First Boys’ Hockey at Westminster. “He is a fine young man who handled it all with a great deal of maturity, and the Bruins made a great decision trading up to get him. Tommy is a great ambassador for the game of ice hockey.”

Tommy has played for Team USA in the Under-18 Junior World Cup and won a silver medal in 2006. He was named Connecticut’s Hockey Player of the Year in 2005-2006.

A Sixth-Form day student who lives in Simsbury, Tommy will serve as co-captain next season for both Westminster hockey and baseball. He also will serve as Junior Prefect for the school during the 2007-2008 academic year.
