Founders' League - Softball Champions

In a battle between the top teams in the Founders' League, Westminster scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to cap an exciting come from behind victory over Choate-Rosemary Hall before a large crowd in Simsbury, on May 14.

Choate came into the game with a 12-2 record, and Westminster was 13-1. Trailing 3-2 in the final inning, the Martlet rally began with a base hit by Mandy Hyne.  With one out, Marianne Specker drew a walk. Sara Ugalde's double to deep centerfield won the game for Westminster, giving the Martlets their 14th consecutive victory and enough wins to secure the Founders League title.

Mandy Hyne had two base hits and scored two runs for Westminster, and Nicole Palazzo also sparked an early rally with a run scoring triple. Ugalde, Marianne Specker, and Avi Greene were the defensive stars for the home team. Ugalde and Specker combined on a momentum turning double play in the fourth inning, and Greene made a spectacular catch behind second base in the fifth inning to stifle a Choate rally.

Hyne pitched a gem for Westminster, facing a very formidable Choate lineup and allowing just four hits, while Nicole Fox caught a strong game. For Choate, Josephine Pucci and Rachel Mackinnon each tripled and scored a run, and Emily Vitale played a fine game behind the plate.  Carly Evans pitched well for the Wild Boars, scattering six hits over seven innings.
