Westminster Community Asked to Accept Rachel’s Challenge

DS
The Rachel’s Challenge program, which is intended to motivate students to positively change how they treat others, was presented to the Westminster community Jan.19 in an assembly in Werner Centennial Center.

Rachel Scott was the first person killed at Columbine High School April 20, 1999. Her diaries and acts of kindness and compassion are the foundation of a school assembly program that has been seen by students in high schools across the country.

The speaker, Cody Burch, showed a powerful audiovisual presentation about Rachel’s life and the Columbine tragedy. Rachel believed that she would have an impact on the world and that she would die young. In an essay she wrote shortly before her death, she said, “I have this theory that if one person can go out of their way to show compassion then it will start a chain reaction of the same.”

Burch asked the audience to consider the following five challenges: to look for the best in others, to dare to dream, to choose positive influences, to look for little acts of kindness, and to start a chain reaction with family and friends.

Rachel’s Challenge has had an impact on entertainers, politicians, sports celebrities, educators and two U.S. Presidents. Additional information about it is available at www.rachelschallenge.com
