Early Results are In!

Kate Caspar
The early round of college applications has produced some very strong results in the Early Action and Early Decisions that have been offered.

This fall 80% of our Sixth Formers decided to file some sort of early application.  Up from 65% last year, this substantial increase speaks to the great pressure our students feel to apply to college Early Decision, which is binding and can provide a slight “edge”, or Early Action, which provides students with an early read—and a possible admit—from the colleges on their list.

The Class of 2007 faces an admissions climate that is, without question, one of the toughest on record.  Not only are colleges reporting record numbers of applications (one popular Boston-area school was up 80% in Early Action alone!) but the quality of applicants also appears to be on the rise.  These trends do not surprise us—we have been talking about them for years.  Indeed, the surge in early applications at Westminster underscores the great anxiety our students feel applying to college in such a competitive time.

Although there is always some disappointment, the good news is that 50% of the senior class—and over 60% of those who applied early—have gained admission to at least one college.  That means that half of the Sixth Formers can take a great big sigh of relief.  As one Sixth Former put it, “I now know I’m going to college!” Anxiety will continue to ripple through the Class of 2007 as applicants await the college decisions in April.
