Honoring and Celebrating Martin Luther King

KM
The entire school community assembled on January 15th, Martin Luther King Jr. Day to honor and celebrate the civil rights leader and his vision. With the support of Lisa Perry, director of multicultural affairs, the cast and crew of this mini-production wove together the sights and sounds of the civil rights movement with words and visions of today.

Leading off the assembly was a stirring rendition of “Lift Every Voice” featuring eight singers. This was followed by a lineup of 10 students, each sharing words of writers, their own thoughts and historic texts.

The group of students who worked on and performed in this program represented the diversity of the Westminster community and the spirit of the day. They crossed all lines: race, nationality, gender, age, and Form, representing a cross-section of students, including athletes, artists, organization leaders, first-time speakers and postgraduate students. Two faculty children, Morgan and Justice Perry, also took part, lending the symbolic vision for our future and the hope in the youth of today to continue fighting injustice everywhere through service and leadership.

The audience was treated to two slide presentations produced by Tiffany Liu ’10. The first took a step back to the height of the civil rights movement, telling the story through scenes from that period while the words of Martin Luther King resonated in the background. The second slide presentation included images of the Westminster School community, ending the day’s program with a note of hope for the future and faith in one another.
