Learning the Risks of Today’s Technologies

DS
Westminster students learned about the potential dangers of the cyber world at a presentation Nov. 14 titled “Cyber Space: A World of Trouble,” given by Katie Koestner, founder of Campus Outreach Services, Inc. The program provided valuable information about the risks of cyber dating, cyber rating, blogs, pornography, gaming, gambling, and cyber stalking.

“Technology is an integral part of our routines and just as we would take care to protect ourselves during daily activities such as locking the car in a dark parking lot, safeguarding our ATM password and walking on the lighted side of the street at night, so should we take care to learn to protect ourselves in the virtual realms that have become our modern social gathering places,” said Kathleen Devaney, director of student life, in introducing the presentation.

Ms. Koestner lead the students through a tour of popular teen Web sites and gave them insights into youth online behavior and its potential risks.  She encouraged the students to take care when using today’s technologies and gave examples of how someone’s cyber resume can affect their chances for admission to colleges and their future employment prospects. She also discussed free speech issues related to the use of technology and the potential for lawsuits and criminal charges related to certain online behaviors.

Ms. Koestner earned degrees in Public Policy and Women’s Studies, magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa, from the College of William and Mary.  Since her graduation, she has become a nationally known speaker on issues related to date rape and cyber safety. She has made presentations to more than a thousand different colleges, high schools and military institutions and has appeared on Oprah, Good Morning America, NBC Nightly News, CNN, MTV, and Larry King Live. This was Ms. Koestner’s third visit to Westminster.
