Winter Long Weekend News

WVNP
November, 2006

Dear Parents,

In planning our school calendar, we try to schedule vacations of sufficient duration so that students don't feel as if they must return to school almost as soon as they get home.  In that spirit, some years ago we extended Thanksgiving Vacation from what was a five-day vacation to what is now a ten-day vacation.  In a similar spirit, we attached the Fall Long Weekend to Parents' Weekend, again accommodating a suggestion expressed by some parents.

While these initiatives have been well received, occasionally students and their families find it difficult to make arrangements to leave school for the Winter Long Weekend, this year scheduled to begin at noon on Thursday, February 1st and conclude at 9:00 p.m. on Monday, February 5th.  Although by the time this vacation arrives students and faculty alike are more than ready for a break from our busy school routine, the short duration of this vacation can present complications for families who live a far distance from the school as they seek to arrange weekend accommodations for their children.

During this winter's Long Weekend, on a one-year-trial basis—so as to determine whether or not there is sufficient interest to make an arrangement of this sort viable for future Winter Long Weekends—Westminster will arrange for students to remain on campus at their parents' request.  We will open and supervise one boys' dormitory and one girls' dormitory, so, depending on the dormitory that we open, your child may need to arrange to sleep in a friend's room in a dormitory other than their own.  Our kitchen will be closed, so students will need to walk down the hill to Simsbury for meals.  A member of the faculty will coordinate a limited schedule of activities during the weekend, including trips to nearby malls, cinemas, and the like.  All school rules as outlined in The W Book will remain in place during the weekend.

So as to cover the expenses necessary to assure proper supervision, students who sign up to remain on campus will be charged $300 for the weekend.  To emphasize, this fee will not cover any meals or any activities that might be arranged during the weekend.  Any student who remains on campus must have sufficient spending money to pay for her/his own meals and activities.  If you wish to reserve a space on campus for your child, please contact Mrs. Faraci at (860) 408-3019 or mfaraci@westminster-school.org.
