Support the Pete Test School Record Swim for Cancer

DS
The Westminster Swimming and Diving Team will host a fund-raising event titled the “Pete Test School Record Swim for Cancer” Dec. 3 at 3:30 p.m. at the Westminster Swim Center. It will help fight cancer and pay homage to Westminster hero, Pete Test, Class of 1979, who has been battling brain cancer for more than two years with the same determination that made him a champion swimmer at Westminster.

Pete broke the Westminster record in the 50-yard freestyle in 1979, a mark that has remained unbeaten for the past 27 years.  It is the oldest, and likely the fastest, school record at Westminster, in this sport’s marquis event. Pete’s time, 21.90 seconds, has been revered by Westminster teams for almost three decades.

In Pete’s honor and in support of his struggle with cancer, Westminster relay teams cheered his name in unison before their races during the 2005-2006 season. The entire Westminster community can show their support this season by sponsoring or participating in the Dec. 3 fund-raiser with all proceeds donated to the American Cancer Society in Pete’s name.

Here’s How to Participate
Participants should collect pledges from sponsors (friends and family) in the amount of cents or dollars per yard. They will then swim as far as they can in 21.90 seconds, whereupon they will be stopped and the distance swum will be measured.  The number of yards swum will be multiplied by the amount pledged per yard, and the product will be the total amount to be gifted by the sponsor.  For example, if a participant has a pledge of 50 cents per yard from a friend and covers 30 yards during her 21.90-second swim, then that friend will make a $15 donation to the American Cancer Society.  Of course, gifts of set amounts are also welcomed.

Participants do not need to be a member of the swim team to participate.  All it takes is the ability to stay afloat for 21.90 seconds and the desire to do their part to fight cancer.  The event promises to be exciting and rewarding, and will only take 21.90 seconds of effort!  Participants and sponsors can download the form below to get involved in this very worthwhile event.
