Running For A Reason

KM
On Saturday, October 14, Robin Newman '87 (whose husband is faculty member Peter Newman ’80) and Kim Tawney (whose husband is faculty member Brian Tawney) ran the Hartford Marathon and, in doing so, raised $7,000 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The majority of the donors are members of Westminster's faculty and staff.

Robin and Kim were teammates on the Connecticut Chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s “Team in Training,” the world's largest endurance sports training program, which raises money nationally. The Hartford Marathon, which required nearly six months of training, was the first for both runners and, with their help, the Connecticut Chapter raised a total of $115,000 with this race alone. In 2002, Kim's daughter, Olivia, was diagnosed with Leukemia, which has been in remission for the last 18 months.

"It was an amazing experience, one I will never forget," noted Robin. "Team in Training is a fantastic group with a wonderful mission. I recommend them enthusiastically to anyone interested in marathon or triathlon training."

"I am living proof that anyone can run a marathon," said marathoner Kim Tawney. "Team in Training took a non-runner and helped me complete a full marathon.  What started out as helping a friend and an organziation near and dear to my heart ended up becoming a physical, emotional and spiritual journey for me.  All in all, it was a wonderful experience, and I'm grateful to have been able to take part in it."

In the year ahead, the Connecticut Chapter will train teams for marathons (26.2 miles, run or walk), half marathons (13.1 miles, run or walk), century rides (100-mile bike ride) and Olympic distance triathlons (one-mile swim, 25-mile bike, 10K-run).
